Accelerated Masters with no Nursing background

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello,

just wanted to see if anyone has taken this path and how it worked out.

My undergrad is Biomedical Engineering. I would have to take some of the prereqs.

Once I have a masters, would I be able to bypass bedside nursing? Due to an old foot injury, I would be unable to be a bedside nurse safely-for myself.

Thanks for for any input!

just going to say that any article that talks about a shortage of nurses or a projected need for nurses is way out of date. in some areas of the country a new grad has the ability to find a job, maybe not exactly a nursing shortage but definitely not hundreds of open jobs. in other areas of the country experienced nurses can't land anything at all. there is a shortage to some degree of experienced nurses in specific specialties but generally speaking there are a lot more nurses graduating than we could ever hope to see employed. Know who pushes the idea of shortages of nurses and the need to get more nurses through school? Schools.

that is certainly true. I also forgot to mention that there is technology being created to reduce nurse labor expense. A robot to dispense medicine is one. And yes a few human nurses on hand for iv starting. Other than that doctors and NPs will take on more. Some places are already phasing out the typical front desk with a kiosk.

Since you don't have any nursing experience, you don't really sit in a good position to judge yourself if this is a good idea or not.

She doesn't have experience so she can't have an opinion but she is getting a whole bunch of opinions from nurses without NP experience.

At least we have nursing experience.

And please remember, OP asked for opinions. Not just opinions that agree with her vision, but any opinions. And then called us snarky for replying.

I think that you are erring on the side of naïveté to believe that floor nurses will be replaced anytime soon by robots. We already have machines dispensing meds (betcha didn't know that) but the entity actually administering the meds must use educated human skills not available to a robot. And if you believe that doctors and NP's will in any way take over the roles of floor nurses, well, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

(Decided to bring out the snark so as not to be unjustly accused.)

No one said she can't have an opinion. I don't see where I said that. I said she is not in a good position to judge d/t lack of experience. And I praised her for doing the smart thing and asking nurses what they think.

Don't put words into my mouth that were not there. In no place whatsoever, did I say anyone does not have a right to their opinion. I don't agree with those of you who say, sure go ahead and just jump into being an NP without a lick of experience. You have the right to your opinion. So do I. And since she asked us for ours, we gave it. We can agree to disagree. But don't say I ever said a person has no right to an opinion. It's not true.

Actually I WAS asking for people with NP experience to give opinions, not just any nurse who has an opinion. Specifically for people who have gone down the path I'm looking at. I'm sure some have had good experiences and some have had bad. And THAT is what I want to learn about.

Have you personally gone that route? To talk about your opinions on it is quite different than doing it yourself. That's like saying: "I know a biomedical engineer so I know exactly how schoolin and afterwards job hunting went for all biomedical engineers". Doesn't really help to answer my original question at all.

I'm sorry if that offends you, that's just my logical, observant, critical thinking, problem solving, engineering brain talking. Oh wait! Isn't that a MAJORITY of what nurses do day to day?!

I'll be more specific with my inclusion and exclusion criteria of people I am trying to reach when I ask a question on the boards again.

If people only expect to read posts on a thread that conform to their own views I think they would be well advised to start their own Blog where they have the power to edit and refuse posts from people who disagree with them/are otherwise are not supportive of them. On a public internet forum there is going to be a wide diversity of people who hold widely diverse views, and who, being true to themselves, will express their views. That is the nature of the internet.

OP you CLEARLY don't like getting dissenting opinions. You DID NOT ask just for NP opinions at the outset of the thread. I have worked some amazing NPs and the best ones had nursing experience first. I know a good many of them and have in my 20 year career so I am not ignorant.

Anyhow, you want just opinions that support your world view. That's fine. I will leave this thread for those who agree with you and make you feel good. Good luck.

Katie-

I think you would make a great NP. You certainly have the intelligence and analytical/critical thinking skills to be successful. If becoming an NP is what you want, don't let the naysayers and haters discourage you. Some people go through life with blinders on and can't even comprehend an alternate pathway to a common end goal. Do well in school and then take care of your patients. Your outcomes will speak for themselves, and that is all that matters.

Um...she did ask for opinions from those who had taken the Direct Entry NP route. Go back and read the original post.

So are you in a good position to judge based on your own criteria?

Hello,

just wanted to see if anyone has taken this path and how it worked out.

She did actually explicitly ask for reports from people that took the DE path to NP.
