Accelerated BSN?

Published

Hi everyone!

I'm Jenn and I live on Long Island. I have a Bachelor's degree in psychology. I struggled during my junior year of college due to outside factors. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and was put on meds, in addition to seeing a counselor. I am now doing much better.

My GPA took a hard hit that semester, and I graduated with a 2.79, but my cumulative from taking courses at other schools is a 2.9.

I really want to get into an accelerated program, but know that they are so competitive. The community college near me, Suffolk Community College, requires a 3.0 cumulative GPA for the associate's program, so I don't know if I will get in there either.

I have my CNA and work as a direct care counselor with individuals with disabilities. I do direct care such as bathing, feeding, changing, and administering meds, which I believe will help me in the field.

I was wondering if you guys had any tips or if anyone was in a similar situation to mine. Although I am much better, my anxiety over the thought of not getting into nursing school is overwhelming. I want nothing more than to be a nurse. I am not sure if I should try for accelerated BSN, BSN, or ASN, or if I should just start from LPN and work my way up. I really want Stony Brooks accelerated nursing program, but know they are competitive.

Any advice or stories you guys have would be greatly appreciated!

Hi I see you just joined. I think you are using your real name? If so please change it. Also if that is a picture of you as your avatar, change that too. This is for your own protection.

Depending on the pre-req courses, that may be a better way to decide which route to take. Apply to any programs you are eligible for but understand that even at the ADN community college it can be very competitive. I taught for ten years in a BSN program, the minimum GPA was 3.0. The reality is that many times those accepted all had a 3.5 and higher.

Thank you I will change them. And I have taken all of my prerequisites except microbiology.

A vast majority of ABSN programs require a minimum of 3.0 GPA in their previous degree. The minimum acceptance GPA is usually far higher (3.5 range). You may need to retake some of your pre-reqs to bring up your pre-req GPA and make you a more competitive candidate.

Would it be a good idea for me to do LPN and then LPN to RN? I know Molloy College also has LPN to BSN.

A 3.0 at Suffolk will not

get you in unfortunately. That is the requirement to apply to the nursing program but it is so competitive people with 4.0's have been wait listed. I had a 3.6 and was told by the director id be lucky to get on the waiting list. Also, you have to take the TEAS exam too now. Not trying to discourage you but just so you are prepared for it. Let me know if you have any other questions. I am in the program now.

I recommend that you go for the lpn.

So i'm going to shamelessly promote my school and suggest Utica's ABSN program, especially if you know you want a BSN. I'm in florida, but they have a new york program too. If you're worried about your GPA, don't be. I didn't have the best either, but they accept as low as 2.8--just double checked their site (here) to make sure that is still the case.

good luck and take care of yourself!

I know this post is old, but did you end up attending and graduating from Utica in St. Petes? I'm really considering this school, especially since my undergrad GPA was low :(
