ABSN UMASS Amherst 2018

Published

Hi there!

I will be applying to UMass Amherst for the Aug 2018 entering class. I wanted to start a thread for any prospective applicants.

Feel free to discuss anything! Hopefully we can all help each other through the next couple of months while we complete apps and await decisions.

:)

Got the call at 1030am as well-accepted off the waitlist!!! Woohoo!! Have an acceptance already at northeastern ABSN but will be letting them know I'm headed to UMASS Amherst!

Good luck to everyone else!

Do you guys mind sharing your stats? :)

Sure thing!

3.28 undergrad GPA

3.48 post bac pre-med GPA

3.62 nursing pre-req GPA

4 yrs as a volunteer EMT with a town ALS ambulance

4 yrs as a hospital volunteer-worked with patients at high risk for dementia

4 yrs as a county-wide domestic violence hotline volunteer

3.5 yrs of clinical work experience in various healthcare settings

It wasn't an easy or straightforward path for me to get accepted. I was waitlisted and then got accepted-but even prior to that happening, it was quite the journey for me to discover that nursing was where I belonged. I'm sharing this now so that others know that a good outcome CAN happen-and for some, like me, it may take awhile (after years of struggle). The end result/career choice could also look a LOT different compared to what you thought you originally wanted and my two cents is to be open to things evolving. If anyone wants to hear more, feel free to message me privately.

Good luck to everyone still waiting and to everyone who's already been accepted-congratulations! To those that read this and have not been offered a seat or a waitlist spot, have faith that your time will come. It will, and it will be that much sweeter because you know that the adversity feels like.

I emailed Jackie yesterday to be removed from the waitlist- I decided to attend a school closer to home. Hopefully this gives someone else a better chance, good luck everyone!

Best of luck in your RN journey :)

Have any more people heard from the waitlist?

Was waitlisted and still have not heard anything

Did not hear anything yet :(

@Rachel9-

I had a 4.0, 10+ years taking care of a child with special needs (commensurate with LPN duties), and I know my A&P professor wrote me a great rec.

Honestly I don't think they care as much about the experience as they do the grades. From previous years it seems they would take the top ~100 GPAs and whittle from there (using the other application components).

I'm not sure I agree with this. I'm in 2017-18 cohort right now finishing up spring semester. From what I see among our classmates, they take experience into consideration a lot more than you think. I personally didn't have good gpa from my first school degree (3.0), had 4.0 from prereqs and about 4 years of health care experiences and there are many who didn't do so great grade wise but had much life experience in health care related areas.

They don't look at or care about undergrad GPA.

They only consider the prerequisite GPA. Like you said, you had a 4.0. I asked admissions about this and they basically admitted as such.

Most students who get in have a 3.7 prereq GPA at least.

I have a 3.8 Pre req GPA and I did not get in. I have very little experience... a year as a PCA

I said "most students"

Of course there are other factors: essay/experience/rec- I'm not discounting experience. All things being equal, they'd look at the other factors to determine if you get a spot.
