Curious - how many of your student were absent for the Day Without an Immigrant?

Just curious - not trolling!

My school had an average absence rate.

I cannot believe school administration was in full support of this stupid protest. The protest was not supporting immigration...it was supporting ILLEGAL immigrants. Both my parents are immigrants from Cambodia, who came here legally and became U.S. citizens. They worked hard to make it in this country, and would NEVER skip work or school to make a point, especially one as ridiculous as this one. Taking your child out of school or refusing to teach in order to protest anything should not be acceptable, ever. Protest after school or work. Skipping school/work or whatever basically says "Hey guess what, I'm an illegal/I support illegal immigration, and I don't care if I have responsibilities, I'm going to protest because I have a moral superiority complex to you Xenophobic Nationalists!" In my opinion, schools who allow and support this type of behavior should have their funding pulled.

(Gets off soapbox)

* I apologize for the rant, this subject is very personal for me because of my immigration heritage, and I feel like these ILLEGALS are cheating yet getting the same result as my parents who worked years to become citizens.

I don't think any apology is necessary. Please, get back on your soapbox...I'd like to hear more. I didn't hear anything about the Day Without Immigrant protest in Cambodia. Did I miss it?

My school's majority is mostly Hispanic and black students, some white and some Asian. But we didn't see many children missing that day, I had a full clinic that day, so eh.

Now for my rant.

What I see, I see two things. My family are a family of immigrants. Most of my family came from Monterrey, N.L, like in the 60s, 70s and 80s. All of my family are legal immigrants, a lot of my cousins and I are native born Americans.

On one side of this issue, when my family came here, there was a bill in place (Or law, I don't remember), that let people in and gives them time to get a residency card or such for an extended amount of time. The reason some of these people are protesting is that they feel they aren't getting enough time to get their issues settled and instead once caught get thrown over the border, that's what some people are worried about.

But at one hand, I get it. I don't like this either. Some of these illegal immigrants are kinda ruining other people's chances, It's making extremely hard for us legal ones, because people see the negativity and always the word "Illegal" with Hispanics, some people thing WE are all illegal. Then some of these people getting caught are actually felons because they haven't gotten their stuff settled and are not residents and such here and they are seriously illegal here.

But I do understand why they don't have a residency card here. That stuff is EXPENSIVE! My dad wants to be a full-fledged citizen here, but it's $800 to be one and when he tried the first time in the 80s, he didn't pass the test because he couldn't read English but it was cheaper $250 or so. What I'm worried is that because of what's going on, they'll make it harder to be a citizen and he'll have a harder time passing (He's around 55.). Then my older brother got his residency card ripped from his evil girlfriend (Don't ask), to get a new one is around $600 or so. So it's hard for someone to be legal here now at these times, financially wise.

End my rant. If I offended ANYONE, I apologize.

@Cocoa_puff, This was not just to support illegal immigrants. Immigrants Period anyone who ever hoped to come to america for a better life. I am glad to be part of a school that fully supports this my schools is 85% hispanic and we already have families that have been ripped apart by the president's increase in deportations. Most people that move from overseas have went through the process of doing things the right way. You may be a child of immigrants but your experience can't be the same because your parents were fortunate enough to have the luxury of becoming legal citizens. My friend was brought here by here parents illegally when she was 8 and she is in here late 20s and has spent thousands to become an actual citizen. This protest is saying that immigrants make a mark in this country and they are not just what the current president says "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're not sending you. They're not sending you. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

[COLOR=#000000]This protest needed to happen when you feel strong about something you don't just feel strong about after 5pm. Its felt in your heart. The Montgomery bus boycott was also "a stupid idea to some" but the impact was huge. A large number of Foreign owned businesses in my city closed that day and took a great loss of money due to these beliefs. I support this. I hope these beliefs of yours and lack of empathy don't come across in your daily interactions with students or.... ummm the entire human race.

And when DACA is ripped away, what will happen to these kids? Deportation to a country where they don't remember living and may not speak the language? In the words of the POTUS: Sad.

Yes, many people have come here illegally. We can't change the ones who have come in. We are all educated people here- critical thinking says we need to ask ourselves WHY so many come to the US illegally. The answer is primarily because it is so difficult to come legally. And when you are fleeing a crime ridden area or want a better life for your children, you want it to be sooner rather than later. (I'd mention cost, but it is also quite expensive to come to the US illegally.)

I know many people who came to the US illegally and then applied for citizenship. In some of those cases it has taken 14 years to have an initial decision. Are you willing to wait 14 years to build a better life? We NEED to make it easier for people to come to the US.

I've lived in South Texas all my life. You're not going to tell me an immigrant story I haven't heard already; legal or illegal. We all know there are those who occupy both ends of this spectrum and every circumstance in between. I agree this is a problem that could be fixed and needs to be fixed. I truly feel for those who are true victims of this circumstance.

I'm even OK with any kind of peaceful protest about which one has a passion for. I'm not OK with a protest having a tangible negative impact on someone else. Like dumping your workload and employment agreement responsibilities onto someone else to facilitate your protest. You can protest on your day off.

@olddude I totally agree but most protest are trying to get the other person to take notice. People have blocked roadways in protest chained there self to a tree im sure countless projects have been held up due to protesters. 12 workers in Oklahoma were fired for taking off on that day and honestly they were told if they took of they would be fired, But if its really that important you have to face the consequence of your actions. Its hard to coordinate a nationwide day of protest around everyones days off;)

What people don't realize it's that it's hard to become a citizen or resident here, and it's expensive. You can say all you want, that they should of become legal, but it's hard. People want a better life here, and some times it comes with a price, I just wish we could fix up our immigration laws, and make it a bit easier for people to be a citizen here or resident.

I hear ya...subjects like this drive me out of my mind. I'm gonna back out of this one before the post gets moved to politics. I'd rather talk about something about which everyone agrees; like mermaids are real.

I was going to respond to this more in depth, but then it would get political and we all don't want that. First off, congratulations to your friend for becoming a citizen! I sincerely mean that, and I hope in the future the process to become a citizen will be improved and simplified. LEGAL immigrants are what makes this country great, and having new people from all over the world with new ideas, cultures, and skills continually helps improve our nation.

Now, you are entitled to your belief and I stand by mine. You may think that my point of view is "what is wrong with this country." However, one of the many things that IS wrong with our country are the lazy, entitled people who think they can drop all their responsibilities to protest, while also passing on this mentality to their children (and depriving them of a day of school). Seriously, if you're so worried about the future, don't skip your job or have your child skip class. If I was an employer, and I found out that my employee skipped work for this protest, I would fire them immediately. Way to show that you're a replaceable part of this company. Someone may feel something "strongly, but don't expect any sympathy for me when they're signing up for unemployment and begging for handouts to feed their kids because they lost their job to protest "the importance of immigration" by skipping work.

Also I love that "my experience doesn't count because my parents had the luxury to become citizens." Umm, my parents worked hard for YEARS to become citizens and learn English. Becoming an American citizen should be an honor and something to feel proud of, as I'm sure your friend is proud of her achievement. But by your logic, why even become a citizen, if you get the same end result as an illegal (including the right to vote)? Why have boarders or even lock your doors, because hey, everyone who is a disadvantaged innocent "undocumented" person here in the U.S. is just looking for a better life. No one would come across the boarder to traffic under-age girls into prostitution, or sell drugs, or murder and rape innocent people. That's just crazy. Why would we want to know who's coming into our country if they are all such good, nice people after all?

I may have a "lack of empathy" as you say, but at least I value dependability, responsibility, citizenship, LEGAL immigration, and umm, national security.
