In their "Twenty Ways to Identify the Best Local Hospital," I found the following points interesting:
6. Check on the quality of each hospital's nursing staff. One way to measure nursing quality is the ratio of registered nurses (RNs) to licensed practical nurses (LPNs). RNs can perform a wider range of professional services. The national average is about 4 RNs for every 1 LPN, according to the American Hospital Association.7. Find out the nurse-to-patient ratio, which will help to determine how much attention you get from caregivers throughout your hospitalization. Usually, it's one nurse for every three to six patients, according to the American Hospital Association. (In intensive care units, it's more like one nurse for every one to two patients.)
Duke has a bad rep for treating its nurses like excrement; nurses tried to start a union there which Duke bitterly contested, spending BIG BUCKS trying to abort. Got in trouble with the government for its anti-union activities. Unfortunately for the nurses, the union initiative ultimately failed

Wow...you just made my day. I was offered a job at Duke which I turned down.
Two hospitals in my area made the list. The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals of Cleveland. My head nurse recently had surgery at the Clinic--was in ICU for a few days. She said that if it wasn't for her husband, she never would have gotten a bath! Her hubby bathed her! Can you believe that!
