A rolling suitcase....really???

I've seen a few posts recommending a rolling suitcase for use instead of a bookbag, etc. Are we talking carry-on size? What dimentions? I'm starting an ADN program in the fall, but I already have a BA degree and a master's degree in other subjects, so I do not think I will have to be taking a bunch of classes other than anatomy, physiology, etc. aside from my nursing classes/clinicals. I know that my nursing classes require a ton of textbooks, but will I be toting them all to class all the time? I just don't want to buy something that will be too big, but I don't want to underestimate the load I'll be lugging around, either.

Thanks!

My school has lots of stairs, and some are unavoidable. I will probably try both a roller and a normal backpack and then decide what works for me. I don't want to kill my back or knees. I will have access to lockers, but at the end of the day I'll still need to take those books home or to school. If I have an option for e-books for my ipad that might be something I'd think about, just for school. I like to have real textbooks at home.

My classes will be clustered all on one day. I bought a rolling tote by by Crop and Go (I think). It is a scrapbooking organizer. I believe it will work perfectly! :)

I've used one for clinical. Depending on the class and/or instructor, they may want you to tote every last book you own. But overall, no, it's not necessary, more of a hindrance than anything, and I only did it to save my back.

The more comfortable I get in this program (third semester) the less I carry to class and clinical because I know what I can get away with. hee hee.

i love my rolly-polly. I have been using it for a few years now. It saves my back and is so much more convenient. I like to be hands free. I put the contents of my purse which consist of a wallet and cosmetic bag in there, along with my books, snacks, bottles of H2O, everything. If I take the stairs, I carry it. Too heavy to carry? -- take the elevator. I use a rolling book bag, but a rolling suitcase/bookbag -- whats the diff? It carries your stuff. Plus, if you have acquired more stuff than your bag can hold, just grab a plastic bag and lay it on the rolly - and off you go.

Every time I see a rolling "back" pack I laugh. Don't look silly with a back pack on wheels or a suitcase. I will laugh at you. :lol2:

Did it ever occur to you that maybe some of the people that use the rollers have neck or back problems and CAN'T use a traditional bag on the shoulder or crossbody? :nono: If you are in this program to become a nurse, are you going to laugh at your patients when they hurt or come in from a fall? "Haha, you fell!" GET REAL DUDE!

Every time I see a rolling "back" pack I laugh. Suitcases are for the airport. Backpacks are meant for your back. Two strap that bad boy and avoid me laughing at you. I will, laugh at you. If your going to get a bag please look professional! Go to Office depot and grab a Samosite "business professional" bag. Don't look silly with a back pack on wheels or a suitcase. I will laugh at you. :lol2:

Issues, you have them.

It's cool. I was probably laughing at you first.

Wow. Really??? Who cares!! I'd rather look "stoopid" then have an injured back or worse. I honestly couldn't care less what my classmates would think of my rolling backpack. If I wanna rock the roller, I'm gonna rock the roller, and be darn proud to rock the roller. So, laugh away, dude. :lol2: There is nothing funny about an injury due to books. Ok wait...maybe a lil funny  but its still not funny!

I think ImKosher was just stating something that a lot of the students think, but would never say. It's an unfortunate truth. I have to admit, my first semester of college, I thought they looked very dorky. But, now that I have 3 semesters under my belt, I bet the folks with rollers are hurting a lot less than I am. Whatever makes it work for people is what they should do. Since I refuse to take the elevator, I'll still be shoving it all in a regular bag, but I completely understand why others don't.

I love my rolling backpack. It's a Router from ebags. It's a little spendy, but got one for my stepdaughter for college and then got mine and the only backpack I've seen last longer is the LL Bean ones I got for my kiddo for Jr High and High School. I chose the ebags one for myself because it has a separate compartment on the side that's nicely padded JUST for a laptop, the books & stuff go in other sections.

I don't use it for school anymore because I've switched entirely to ebooks, but I use it for work now because I have my work laptop plus all my school stuff I carry around.

I don't think a rolling backpack makes anyone bad or wrong. Nor does lugging a backpack up and down stairs make you a better or healthier person.

me too. the major stairs at my school are outside so there is no avoiding them or using an elevator. they are several flights of stairs. however, inside the building there are elevators we can all use. i'm not the type who always likes to take the easy way out and i do prefer the stairs on most occassions. i don't consider myself unfit, i do exercise. so, i know i'm able to hike up and down them with little to no issue. i guess the real test will be when school starts and i start doing it. only then will i really know what's best for me. seriously, i certainly don't want anyone to be injured due to books either. i too, can see why they do it. as for imkosher, i was teasing. :lol2: i knew he'd get flamed for saying what he said.
