I have recently started looking for jobs. I knew things were bad with massive layoff of nurses in local hopitals, but I was shocked to see so few jobs in the newspaper. I started looking elsewhere. The typical job websites seem to have the same jobs over and over, the ones that can't seem to keep nurses (red flags!). I decided on a whim to check Craisglist. Well low and behold, there were tons of jobs, not just nursing jobs but all sorts of jobs on there. I was shocked. I suppose it is a cheap way to advertise. Is this a new trend?

A lot of these job posts are just agencies trying to bulk up their books. I think you will find that a lot of the posts are 'bait-and-switch' so they say "RN1s needed for SICU/PACU sign-on bonus etc etc" and then you contact the agency and they will say "Errr yeah that one is gone but we do have a super RN job in this LTC with a patient load of 75 and minimum support staff"
Just be wary of ANYTHING on Craigslist... free advertisement often=cheap employer.
Good luck in your search. Leverage your personal connections as much as you can to get a foot in the door.

I did find a nursing job with Craig's list. However, beware the scammers. I once got a message asking if I could start work right away. They said all I had to do was to get a credit check and then I could get started. NO NO NO. If they ask for a credit check they are scammers:mad:!!!!! Yes, there are a lot of jobs on Craigslist. I guess everyone wants to save money so they go to CL for free job advertising for nurses.

Yes there are a lot of jobs on craigslist, but as the above poster mentioned BEWARE OF SCAMMERS! I took my job search the Craigslist route and came across a lot of scammers. There seems to be a lot that want you to just send your resume out to them right away without asking any questions. I heard that there have been people posting jobs on Craigslist as a way to get peoples information such as phone numbers (to sell lists to telemarketers) etc.
ALSO the few real postings that I did come across were for pretty shady nursing homes or were homecare positions that aren't willing to pay much. Have a look at the postings but honestly, after months of job hunting I didn't find anything worth while on there.
Good Luck

I have noticed too that most hospitals are now going with job announcements on their own websites, and you actually apply through the individual hospital's websites.

In terms of decent nursing work, craigslist is a red flag period. You have to stop and wonder about any facility who would advertise this way. In my opinion, this equals cheap. Beware.

In my locale, the newspaper raised their rates substantially for advertisements so alot of businesses aren't posting 'help wanted' ads there anymore. My local hospital is actually advertising on the radio!lol What about making up your resume and sending it to places you are interested in working?
Well I have done that in the past and mostly they say that if they are not accepting applications they just toss it out. I have a job, I am just looking to make a change and some facilities seem to update the jobs on their websites but others don't. I have seen jobs in the paper then gone to the website and it is not there. When I got hired my job remained posted on the website for almost a year before IS updated it. There has to be a reliable place to look, but it seems like every facility does things differently.
Don't get me wrong, I like my job, but the pay is so low I can't live on it (30,000- yes I am an RN). I had a second job to help out but they have hired so many that they are overstaffed and I am not getting hours. So frustrating.

Whenever people are desperate, there are others willing to exploit, enter Craigslist !
OMG!!!! Your job was still listed (after you were hired) on the website for almost a year!!!! I had always assumed that these websites had sense enough to be current and up to date. I guess not. Thanks for that information. That's good to know.
