  1. Should I look for a hospital phlebotomy job?

    • Yes, it's a great opportunity
    • No, going backwards would be a waste of time

Hi there,

I recently passed my NCLEX-RN and have been looking for jobs, have gone to job fairs, getting interviews for the past month, but still has not ended up with a job. I do have Phlebotomy experience at a private facility. I'm just wondering if taking up a job first as a phlebotomist at a hospital would help me "get my foot in the door," as opposed to looking for Nursing Jobs.

Any input would be appreciated!

One thing to keep in mind when working below the highest level of licensure is that the BON will hold you to the expectations of the licensure even if it exceeds the duties of your job description. Sometimes, that means making a decision between keeping the license or keeping the job if an extreme situation arises. Additionally, many employers may see applying for jobs that applicants are over qualified for as a risky investment- they know you'll jump ship as soon as you find a nursing position. Only you can make the decision whether that's worth it.

I would. Then you can network.

I agree with Rose_Queen, the BON does hold you to certain standards in order to keep your license. It's only been 1 month, which I know may seem like forever to you, but why don't you try applying for a residency. Have someone look over your resume to make sure it presents the best of you. Try searching outside of your local area or applying for a basic specialty like Med-Surg until you get your foot in the door. Don't give up! I mean if you absolutely need a job this instant, then by all means, get the phlebotomy job while you find the RN position, but that won't necessarily get you in the door.

I totally understand how you feel. I started looking for jobs in December, and after I graduated in May, I still did not have a job :(. I took the NCLEX two weeks after graduation, and I received my license. It was still hard to find a job. I was even hoping to work as a CNA at the local hospital. My dream is to work at Arkansas Children's Hospital, but it is two hours away from where I live, and I have a one year lease on my apartment. After 6 months of worrying and tears, I got offered a position at Arkansas Children's Hospital! I will live with one of my classmates for the time being. So OP do not give up and if you are willing to drive a little, go for it!
