Biden hails infrastructure win as 'monumental step forward'

With help from 13 Republicans....

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Saturday hailed Congress' passage of his $1 trillion infrastructure package as a “monumental step forward for the nation" after fractious fellow Democrats resolved a months-long standoff in their ranks to seal the deal....continue

I'm sure if you look closely at the Republicans you would find a direct benefit to their constituents.  Fair enough, this will benefit many constituents.   Republican held areas will benefit too although it would be nice to cherry pick out MTG's district since the calls it "communism".  LOL

I found it interesting that Jeff Van Drew, the guy who switched parties and held an event where he pledged undying support for Trump, voted with the Democrats.  I think we can assume Trump's influence is fading, and Trump will be the last to know.

This Trump interview reflects Trump's relative ignorance on topics, like cryptocurrency IMV...when the interviewer can get him to actually answer a question. In this interview Trump indicates that if he runs again, candidates likeDeSantis will just drop out of the race.

Do you think DeSantis would step aside for a Trump candidacy?

Interesting interview. I love how Adam Shapiro tried to coax something coherent from him regarding the debt ceiling, finally giving up due to time constraints.

DeSantis would probably step aside, because he sided with Trump often enough they'd be competing over a significant number of the same voters.

Trump is publicly speculating about running again in 2024, but I don't see how he could continue to insist without evidence that our system is riddled with fraud and then willingly involve himself in it again.

If he does run, I would hope one of the "anti-Trump conservatives" would challenge him, because there is no doubt he'll be confronted on the 1/6 insurrection in any potential debate, as he should be.

If Trump was a wise man, and he really isn't stupid, instead of a narcissist, he would get behind a candidate for President and just rest on whatever laurels he might have.  As we saw in Virginia keeping the Trump base satisfied without being a full-fledged Trumper is a winning combination.  Trump can keep his base satisfied and the anti-Trump republicans an breathe a sigh of relief and continue to vote republican.

We'll see if my prediction that this will play out in some areas in the 2022 election.  Trump hasn't destroyed the party but he lost the Presidency and put them in disarray but they can and will make a comeback.  Traditionally losers tend to not run or not get elected.  There have been exceptions like Hillary Clinton who lost to Obama but turned around to gain the nomination again.  She lost to Trump and wisely we will never see her again.

There's a lot of Republicans to be energized.  I see this is "Let's Go Brandon" insult movement, as well as other more subtle ways.  A friend of mine was talking on facebook about the shortage of cat food in North Carolina and several people said something negative about Biden.  People don't like the way things are going.

Keeping Democrats energized with a good economy and results like the infrastructure package is crucial.

As is telling the truth about republic election lies, the insurrection on 010621 and the threat to our democracy.

I don't think the average voter is concerned about threats to the Democracy like this. They want people that broke the law to go to jail but the Democracy seems to have survived.

Empty shelves, high gas prices, a stable border,  good economic performance and low covid rates without forcing people out of their jobs,  and things that are tangible are more important as time goes on and the January 6th fades.

This is true mostly because the press won't start reporting on the urgency of this threat until the battle is mostly lost and they are in jeopardy for their reporting.  They are still seeking to create some type of balanced view of the two political parties, their political agendas and objectives and to make bank on animus rather than on informing the population. The right wing press doesn't discern any threat to our Constitution from Trump and others who are lying about elections and voter laws. Nor do they care about the lies about what the intentions were on January 6. They are the propaganda echo chamber that makes the threat real.

The parlous state of US democracy was conspicuous in the early days of 2021 as an insurrectionist mob, egged on by the words of outgoing president Donald Trump and his refusal to admit defeat in the November election, stormed the Capitol building and temporarily disrupted Congress’s final certification of the vote. This capped a year in which the administration attempted to undermine accountability for malfeasance, including by dismissing inspectors general responsible for rooting out financial and other misconduct in government; amplified false allegations of electoral fraud that fed mistrust among much of the US population; and condoned disproportionate violence by police in response to massive protests calling for an end to systemic racial injustice. But the outburst of political violence at the symbolic heart of US democracy, incited by the president himself, threw the country into even greater crisis. Notwithstanding the inauguration of a new president in keeping with the law and the constitution, the United States will need to work vigorously to strengthen its institutional safeguards, restore its civic norms, and uphold the promise of its core principles for all segments of society if it is to protect its venerable democracy and regain global credibility.

If Americans act stupidly in the coming elections because they prefer to believe their propaganda they may get to spend some quality time with empty shelves and scarcity, like the citizens of other failed democracies.

Our canary is gasping and having trouble staying on his perch.  We should heed the warnings and move decidedly in a different direction away from the threat.

Nobody really believes January 6th was a big deal and that includes the people throwing around the nonsensical insurrection term.

The vast majority of people at the protest that day were peaceful and taking an unguided tour of the capital pales in comparison to the damage done in leftist attacks last year.  Ask any random person on the street what happened January 6th and they won’t know.

Yeah, we've heard that argument that it was just tourists taking selfies and wasn't as violent as the BLM protests already.  Old discussion.  Yawn

Why is it so many of you want to deflect away to another topic when we bring up January 6th?
