A & P pre requisites - need advice

Published

Hi everyone,

This fall semester I will be taking anatomy w/ the lab and physiology w/ the lab (A & P are separate courses at my school). I'm taking these courses as pre reqs for the ABSN program. I have one more week of a general bio and lab course I've been taking during the summer. It's looking like I'm going to get an A in the lecture and lab. However, I'm feeling a bit nervous about taking A & P. I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone has on study methods for A & P :) also, does anyone know of any good apps for A & P? :)

From what I've seen is a lot of people suggest using flash cards and studying for at least 2 hours a day. It's a lot of memorization

YouTube is really great for labs. I found many videos with the exact same or similar models with really detained explanations.

I also used YouTube for class lectures as well since I'm more of a visual person.

I'm taking Anatomy this fall . I have watched countless hours of youtube videos of people's study tips and some of them were BRILLIANT.

-Most people tend to record lectures and listen to them a few times... that is great and all but there is a lot of "filler and fluff" information in a lecture. I'm going to take my notes and any other important information and record myself reading them and listen to that. So I will be listening in lecture, writing my notes, speaking my notes, and then listening to them again with just the important stuff.

-I have already started making flashcards so I don't fall behind right off the bat. I do everything in different colors. Bold face terms are written in blue, Etymology is written in orange, Concepts are written in red, Review/Practice questions in the back of each chapter are written in purple, obsolete and slang words (which for some reason we will be quizzed on) is written in green.

One more think I thing I plan on doing is buying a bunch of white under shirts and drawing bones, muscles, etc (or whatever we are studying that week) on them and making my husband wear them around the house so I will be studying with out actually sitting in front a book 24/7.

As I'm sitting here typing this I'm watching a series on YouTube called "Anatomy for Beginners" They go a little into the physiology of the body too. It's pretty much a 5 (I think) part series of dissection of donated cadavers. Super interesting stuff.

I start A&P I this fall also. I went and purchased my books today & decided to pick up some A&P flashcards to go along with it. They were about $30. I'm also going to start watching the Youtube videos megkat posted about this weekend.

Even tho I bought A&P flashcards that are ready to go, I probably will make my own also & study lecture/lab notes for at least an hour a day.

Thanks for the tips, it has also helped me.

I recorded my lectures, took notes during class and re wrote them after while supplementing with more info from listening to the lecture again. My professors have never done power points so it was really on me to learn the material from scratch!

I'm taking A&P 1 this fall as well. However, my A&P are together. I'm going to be using a lot of flash cards, and besides reading from the book, just be looking on you tube, google for different resources. Believe me, the internet has so much resources to help out. Good luck this fall, you going to be just fine.

Thank you all for the advice, it's greatly appreciated. I've already purchased a voice recorder to record lectures as well as a supplemental book, Barron's E-Z Anatomy and Physiology (bought on amazon). I will probably buy some A & P flashcards also. @megkat, I will definitely look into watching that video series on Youtube. @patiently_waiting which flashcards did you purchase if you don't mind me asking? Good luck to all of us taking A & P this fall! :)

You should download the Khan Academy app. I have already finished the A&P sequence and that app was so helpful. Also the ITunes U app is pretty cool too. You can listen to lectures and watch power points from classes at major universities.
