well, it's about time to start this thread, i think!! let's get our bearings and see who all is in the same boat in january!

i finish up the first half of a&p with a comprehensive exam on december 13th and then it's right into the physiology portion of the course. we actually are starting special senses this week and next but will only get the first chapter done.

so .... who else is in? when did you take a&p i and how is your course set up? do you have the prof you want and are you looking forward to it?

i will include the sites from the a&p i thread that might be helpful! i will add/subtract as i get a chance to look through them a bit more or if anyone else suggests some good sites.

~ karen ;-)

We are using Tortora 11th edition too. We also used for API last qrt, but several of the students who were repeating the class just kept their 10th edition from last time. I found mine online for $100 new and was totally stoked . We start classes on Tuesday. I have REALLY enjoyed this break!
GREAT price! I can't believe how much my texts and study guides, yada yada yada were! That is the same with students in my class. In fact, sometimes the prof goes from the old text and it's always just in a slightly different spot -- same info as far as I've been able to tell!! I am enjoying the break too .. I should really be into my Nutrition books, though. Bleah. Oh well, one more night of freedom!

Tomorrow ask me if I've started what I was supposed to get done over break, okay? LOL

I know, a friend had actually loaned me her 10th edition, but when they switched to 11th in the Fall, I thought I HAD to have the new one. NOT!! My teacher actually likes the old one better too, except for some of the new illustrations. One day last qtr she actually said "I'd like to drop-kick this book right out the door!" in a moment of frustration. Oh well.

Anyhow, I know what you mean about what you were supposed to get done. Me too. But, I know I'm about to go back into overdrive, so I'll just get it done then I guess. I even tried starting on the edocrine system this afternoon, but my brain just wasn't having any of it

I know .. our prof likes the old one better too. However, I think he would prefer another text altogether as he is a physiologist and says that the book is written by anatomists. I do like the text as I feel it does explain it the way I can understand it .. but sometimes in too much detail and then I use some other source to try to refocus my brain.

I even tried starting on the endocrine system this afternoon, but my brain just wasn't having any of it.
Ooooo I can imagine!! That just sounds nasty at the moment! We really do need the time off, I think. Now it's been 2 weeks and 2 days since I've studied and I can't figure out if my brain is returning from or to mush! I really meant to start 2 days ago but, oh well! I am tagging along with dh tomorrow to do some business calls out of town -- I think without the kids -- so I will study on the way and while he is in his calls. That will be my breakthrough! LOL

So which chapter are you on? I am too lazy to take my book out of the shelf and see where the endocrine system is.

The Endocrine system is in chapter 18. I'm not really even sure if that's where we're starting back up next week, since I don't have the syllabus yet. I was a little bummed that I couldn't get it before the break, but now I'm actually grateful. It forced me to chill out, LOL.

I think we are starting there though because a friend who was in AP2 last qtr with the same teacher says they started there. Also, we sort of raced through the special senses in ch.17 on the last lecture day.

As far as the book goes, I usually read the chapter through once, spend a lot of time on the pertinent illustrations and diagrams and rely heavily on other web-sites when I don't get something, so I REALLY appreciate all the links you've posted.

I love the anatomy part of this class, but the physiology really gets to me. Sometimes I feel like I read the same explanations over and over again without them sinking in. Our teacher also gives us fairly detailed notes to follow along in her lecture and it's good to study from those. For our final I must have made myself 350 flashcards-but it worked:)

Uh-oh, I feel my brain starting to kick back into to gear, just writing all of this....I think I'm getting a little excited about going back...but not too soon ;)

Specializes in L/D.
We are using the Hole's Human Anatomy and Physiology 10th ed.

Jen

I used this book last semester for my Anatomy class, good book. I am jealous that everyone knows what books they are using for next semester. I emailed my teacher but haven't heard anything yet. I would like to try to get it cheaper on the internet before school starts.

We find out about what texts we need by visiting our overpriced campus book store -- the required and recommended texts are listed with the course name on the shelves in the different subject sections. They try to get you over a barrell but there are lots of other sources out there so we take our paper and pencils with us and write 'em all down. They also have a used book table near the bookstore at the beginning of semesters and you can sell your old texts to the same place at the end of the term. So far I haven't had any to sell, though! LOL

Interesting system.

I am NOT going to sell my A&P book! (by the end it's going to be pretty beat up anyway)

Awesome -- I felt the same way reading it!! It IS exciting to think about being back soon! I am really enjoying being back in school. I just want to get this dang nutrition course out of the way. What a bad attitude I have!!

Here's our course line up, week by week:

Special Senses/Endocrine

Cardiovascular (Blood/Heart)

Cardiovascular (Circulation)

Lymphatic/Immune

He got way ahead last term so I expect we will continue at the same breakneck speed. It's kind of nice at the end because you have more time for review but sometimes I feel like it's impossible to keep ahead of things! The labs seem to really help me but that's like a whole other course on top of the lectures.

I'll be taking A&PII starting in January. My professor for A&PI is only teaching day classes next semester, so I had to go for someone new. I hear he's really good, at least. I'm so excited! I can't believe I barely have 2 weeks more to wait!

Karen,

I noticed we're about the same age, how long have you been back in school?

It's been a year for me. I don't expect to get into our nursing program until Fall 2007 since I had no college before this and was starting a little behind as far as pre-reqs go, I had pre-reqs for my pre-reqs, but I LOVE being in school now:)

My teacher would go at a very leisurely pace for the beginning of each new section and then we would really have to cram at the end so it was kind of the opposite of the ways yours did it. I quit trying to get very far ahead though because sometimes if I went too far in the book I would have to unlearn things that she didn't agree with.

Are you on a quarter or semester system? Looks like we have some of the earliest winter start dates on this thread.

A & P II Starts on Jan 17 for me. We also are using Holes 10th. In A & P I We covered the first 12 chapters and now we start on 13. First lab practicum is memorization of 150 veins and arteries. We will get sheets and have to label them with no word bank, and this happens right around Valentine's day!!! I am already starting on this but having a hard time buckling down!

Me, being a sucker for punishment, signed on for two winterm classes starting tomorrow I will be in classes from 8am until 5:15pm for two weeks!!! They cram in a semester's worth of work in this time and do not give you breaks from what I hear! Hopefully this boot camp will make A & P seem a breeze!

Regular semester I am taking A & P II and a computer class I need (this one is online) so I only have to be there for student senate and A & P is an evening class and I am looking for a job to work full time and make some money before I enter the Nursing Program in the fall. I will take the summer off for once, no classes unless I cave and sign up for Microbiology!

well, lol, time on my hands this morning and just read through this whole thread. 30 people [updated dec 30] have posted to say they are taking this so far! i know, inquiring minds really wanted to know that. looks like many people are starting back on january 9th! we start on the 4th but i will be happy to be back.

my course is a two semester deal so i don't have a mark for a&p i but that section of the course is behind me now and, in the end, my final grade will be two whatever-my-mark-is. anyone else here taking it like this? i did enjoy last semester but have heard conflicting reports as to what this next part will be like. some people say it is easier because after having learned all the parts, we now start to figure out more what they do, etc. then some say it's more difficult because you have to understand the functioning, etc. what have you heard about it?

anyway, just hanging out here today! we've finally finished christmas with both sides of the family and today i will do some reading for my nutrition course. dh's birthday is tomorrow but that is usually a more relaxed affair, even though we will be having ten people over for supper (all family plus my dd's boyfriend).

how is everyone doing? here is my list from this a.m. (my apologies if i accidentally missed anyone!) come join us if you haven't already and/or feel free to jump in at anytime. so far i have found everyone in this forum to be very kind, helpful and understanding!!

Congrats on you going to school!! That's awesome! I started in the fall of 2005 and will apply to the nursing program in May if all goes well! I have a degree from before (B.Ed.) and can use a few of those courses in this degree so that was good news! You can read about my story in the first entry of my journal if you would like to and if you have any more questions, just ask! https://allnurses.com/forums/journal.php?do=showjournal&j=63

We are on a semester system so will be going until April.

I look forward to talking to you more!!
