well, it's about time to start this thread, i think!! let's get our bearings and see who all is in the same boat in january!
i finish up the first half of a&p with a comprehensive exam on december 13th and then it's right into the physiology portion of the course. we actually are starting special senses this week and next but will only get the first chapter done.
so .... who else is in? when did you take a&p i and how is your course set up? do you have the prof you want and are you looking forward to it?
i will include the sites from the a&p i thread that might be helpful! i will add/subtract as i get a chance to look through them a bit more or if anyone else suggests some good sites.
Well, I got my first lab practical back today. I got a 98% and felt pretty happy with that. We also took our first lecture test today, covering blood and the endocrine system. In spite of my pledge to remain sane this quarter I probably studied at least 24 hours over the long weekend and another 2 this morning. I even got to that really bad overstudying place last night.
So today's test was pretty tough. You really have to understand a lot of the nitty gritty physiology to do well. Can't wait to get my grade tomorrow and see how I did. There were several questions I was not 100% sure on.
One strange thing happened though. A couple of girls I was in AP1 with sit next to me in lab. They do ok, but not great. Well of them, the one who doesn't study very much, had a 94% on her lab, but her friend had an 80-something. I was surprised, but congratulated her.
Well, when the teacher went over our answers from the front of the class, there were 6 answers that were incorrect on the 94% paper that weren't marked wrong! The other girl had 3 marked wrong that were actually right and my study partner (who studies very hard) had a few marked wrong that were right as well...
Of course the two who saw the mistakes that hurt their grades took it to the teacher to be corrected and got a little bit more credit, but not all that they thought they were due and the other student (94) didn't.
After all of that we had another new lab on the heart. Has anyone else done this yet and how do you think it compares to endo?

BTW-MonaMona, I also go to a community college but our A&P is divided into 1 and 2.
Congrats Julie....98% is awesome!! How weird about the grades....why didn't they get the credit that they thought they were due? Sounds like you are going to have to really pay attention to the grades this semester (I am sure that you already do :)) Wonder why there was so many mistakes?
I have my test covering the endocrine and blood chapters next wednesday. I am really nervous about it plus this semester they are trying something different...they are putting our lecture and lab tests on the same night. I feel a little overwhelmed with that. I am doing ok with most of it but I am struggling with the actions of hormones. Hopefully, it will click soon.

I had the same teacher last qrt. for AP1, and she's really great so that was unusual incident and it surprised me, but I'll be keeping my eyes open.
Good luck with lab and lecture tests on the same day. We usually have ours a day apart, but I noticed at least for these last tests, that the two overlap really beautifully so maybe it won't be too bad. I made so many cards for hormone actions I think you'd could have buried me under them, but I was glad of it today because there were a lot of questions about them. Especially things like how are they regulated, (chemically, neurally or hormonally), what are their target organs, etc. I'm sure you'll do fine.
I'm glad it helpped! The power point quizzes like that are how I survived A&P1.
Another fun one for blood typing is the American Red Cross's blood matching game. It's on the first page of links here. It acctually kept me amused for awhile. It just sharpens your what blood types match what blood types skills.
I just had to tell you that last night I went to that Red Cross site you recommended. Dang, a lot of recipients had to leave with out their tranfusions before I got the hang of it, but it really helped! Whenever I had a blood type question today, those little figures would pop on the screen in my head and I think I aced that part, thanks for the tip!
Just one more thing...if any of you are studying for lab practicals, or when you are...that site Karen has posted on the front page called "plastic models"

I started class today and it was so long, the first day seems to drag with all the intro stuff. I was shocked when my teacher gave us a copy of all his lecture notes, I have never had teacher do that. There were several students in his class that have had him as a teacher before so I took that as a sign that he is a good teacher.
Mona Mona- My anatomy and physiology classes are set up different as well. Last semester I took anatomy and this semester I am taking physiology- different teacher, class, book, etc.
Julie64- Last semester in my anatomy class 3 out of 4 TESTS I had to argue with my teacher about an answer being right, when she marked it wrong. One time I spent a good 10 minutes trying to tell her that her answer was wrong, she finally realized that I was right. I felt kinda bad arguing with my teacher but d@mnt I knew I was right. She seemed like a good teacher but after that I began to wonder.

My class is working on the heart now. The anatomy part is pretty easy. Identifying structures, blood routes and stuff is going well. The physiology part is a pain. This might just be because I really haven't sat down and reviewed the materials, or because I never quite mastered muscle contraction in A&P1 so when she is going over heart muscle contraction and comparing it to skeletal muscle I'm kind of lost.
With study it shouldn't be that bad.
For me Endocrine came a lot easier. I think it could have just been my teachers way of teaching it.
I started this class last night! At last... Well, the teacher was awesome. He even came up to me and my friend after class to ask how we liked his class, did he go too fast, etc. We jumped right into the endocrine system. He taught in a way that was like, you just get it. He makes it easy to understand. I love this class already!
I walked out of there feeling pretty confident, I knew there were a couple that I missed, but overall felt that I did well. I got an 84. Not very happy with that. So maybe not comletely reading the chapters in the book is not going to work for me after all. There were some really tricky questions though that we tried to argue for this afternoon, to no avail. Hope the next one goes better.

I would have taken the course this fall so i feel a little behind. I kinda nervous. Well once again sleepless nights due to major studying. I wish all of you the best of luck.

Raleg6, it must be really difficult getting bumped off course the way you did with Hurricane Katrina and all that that entailed for you, but way to go for getting back on the horse and sticking with your goals despite the major setback. Best of luck to you.
