A&P II lab and lecture...does this sound screwy???

Took my lab practical on Monday and got a 96....no problem. Now the lecture test was Friday.... Our teacher has developed her own outline to go with the book and she has about 250-300 questions on each unit for us to answer. She puts out a list of the questions that are "MOST" important for us to study for the test. I copied all the questions she said were important....ended up with about 18 pages of stuff(front only and hand written) and studied these....I got a 68(first lecture I got a 56 and 1st lab 86) and I studied! Another girl in my class got a perfect score on the lab and she really studied(she had over 300 notecards) and she only got a 74......does this seem odd?? I was waiting in hall to see how people did and our teacher was complaining because the average score was 56 for the class.....she was saying that there was no reason because she pulled the questions from the testbank and from the basic anatomy book.....one of the girls was like....I want the questions from "MY" book....the one I read and study. I'm frustrated right now over the whole deal. We studied what she said was important for us to study and then she put stuff we weren't told to study all over the test. I have sat in on Basic....it's different from the way we do things.......I don't know....she is going to have a "talk" with the class on Monday and we are all going to have to retake the test on Wed.

Any comments?

glad to hear the instructor will at least have a conversation with the students regarding the test. let us know how it goes. hang in there.

Basically she tells us what is important for us to know....she lectures over it all and as we are going through she will tell us well that's not going to be on the test or this sin't that important....blah blah.....well stuff she said wasn't important and such that we did not study because she told us not to do so was on this test so we shall see what is going to happen. All I need is a C... and right now I am praying to get it....I am carrying a 77 in the class thanks to my lab practicals......I will let you guys know what happens on Monday though......

Yes, let us know what happens:)

When I was in A&P, both I and II, I also studied online. Found Hole's Essentials for Anatomy and Physiology to be of great help.

I also read the summary of the chapter and answered the questions at the end of the chapter BEFORE I read the chapter. The other thing I did was get the workbook/study guide that went with the book even if it was not required and answered the questions from there.

I always did badly on the first exam in each part of A&P, but it gave me a good idea of where the instructor was going to come from on future tests. We were not allowed to keep the exams, but I did write down EVERY question that I could remember after class on the day of the exam for future studying.

Hope this helps!

I'm in A&P II. I study all the time. My instructor wants us to know every detail.

After reading the posts and agreeing with all.... I think you should listen well during lecture. Then, study everything..... Know it like the back of you hand. If you don't understand something, pop into the Learning Lab/resource center. Sometimes, the people in the LL have an inside scope on Instructors (i.e. they know what someone needs to do to make it through their class).

I hate to say it, but A&P II is the only class I have right now. And, I study at least 10 hours a week. Because, I'm essentally teaching myself. My study partners have C and D averages. I have the "A".

Don't forget talk with the resource center.... Let us know what happens on Monday.

Hi there,

Sending well wishes and ((hugs))!

That's not cool about your instructor testing you on things she told you, you didn't need to know. And what's with taking questions from a different book? I know when I had A&P I there were always names of organs and chemicals and processes that had at least 3 different names for them. What you called them was just dependent on the term that the author of the book happened to use.

I wouldn't give up hope just yet. At least your instructor is nice enough to say "Hey, we've got a problem here. Why are my students doing so poorly?" and at least she is giving you guys the opportunity to redeem yourselves. I know of lots of instructures who could care less that their whole class was failing.

Sounds like there are real communication problems between the students and instructor. Hopefully, your teacher is just clueless. I would go in and when you all discuss the problem just tell her like it is. Tell her she put material on the exam that you were told you would not be responsible for. And ask, point blank, if she intends to do the same again.

Ask her if you can set up ground rules for the exam. For example, my A&P Instructor would only take questions from material covered in class, would give us hints if something was really important and likely to be on the exam, and would give us a list of diagrams and drawings from the book and then tell us that we would be tested on 3 of them.

Our teacher was the best and his exams while not easy were always very fair. And I'll add that we, the students, still ended up "teaching ourselves" most of the material from the book.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Well.....basically we were told today that we will retake the exam on Wednesday...same test that we took on Friday. We should know it....no we may not see what we missed study all information.....thats about it......

Robin.. that sucks.. I am suprised her tests are like that.. When I had her, the questions that she told us to study was where the information came from... It was in a totally different way, but that was all I used to study was her questions and I got an A... Good Luck... :)

I know I was really shocked to have had this probelm with all I have heard, but she said that we should know the basic A&P stuff as well...it's just a different book and questions are worded differently than in our book.......we all did rather poorly on the first test(there are other issues here that I will have to PM you about) and she didn't want to use her regular test so she pulled from other places.......hopefully we will get back to normal......

Well.....studied Monday and Tuesday......retook and got a 78....brought it up 10 points. Midterm grade was a 80 B.....she said most people stayed right around the same score.....only about 5 people or so actually brought their score up........
