A&P I: The Summer '05 Anatomy and Physiology Club

Published

Okay, so am I the only one crazy enough to be taking this during the summer?:uhoh21:

I've been so excited to finally get to take part in one of these things.

Anyways, school starts June 6 here. I bought my texts Wednesday (Marieb: Text and Study Guide-6th Edition; Lab-Cat Version-8th edition), and am pretty comfortable with Chapter One. I love the website, although it looks like my Prof won't be using the "My Anatomy" stuff. boo.

Can't wait to get this thread rolling. How is everyone else feeling?

I start A & P I after being out of college for almost 5 years on Monday. I picked up my Hole's Anatomy book and lab book and I am super nervous! For one thing, I am VERY tenderhearted when it comes to animals (that's why I'm a vegetarian actually) and I know that we will be dissecting a frog and a cat by the lab book...not sure how I'm going to do, but it's a necessity to pass so I'll just hang in there the best I can. Any one have any advice?

I've been out since Winter semester, 1997 and it really doesn't feel as strange as I thought it would. I think now I'm better prepared mentally for school because I have direction now, whereas before I was just there because I thought that's what everyone else wanted. I think it's a good thing you're tenderhearted - in fact, it will probobly be a great asset to your patients! :) The only thing I can say, is what helped me in the past for dissections, was to try to think of it as a learning experience, rather than, "I'm dissecting a frog, cat, animal..." Try not to worry about it too much. It's easier said than done, I know, but I've found (for me, at least!) that the more I worry about something, the more of an issue it is for me. (If that even makes sense!)

Hopefully someone else can give you some better advice. :p

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing!

Bridget, congrats on finishing your first exam! :D Mine is next week and I'm SO nervous! :uhoh21:

Hole's A&P has something called the Essential Study Partner in the left hand column on that page that has interactive quizzes and pictures and such that's been helpful, if anyone is interested. :)

Hope you're all doing well!

Hi everyone,

I am taking A&P this summer and I just finished my first exam. It has been 20 years since I graduated from college and I was so nervous about taking this test that my hands were shaking. Luckily, I pulled through just fine:) I found that the online multiple choice and outlines where helpful with my Hole's Anatomy book.

I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND YOU. I LOVE ANIMALS, EVEN VOLUNTEER MY TIME TO THE LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTER AND PROVIDE FOSTER CARE AT TIMES.

IN HUMAN BIOLOGY WE HAD TO DISSECT A SHEEPS BRAIN, AN EYEBALL, A FROG, AND A FROG. NOW IN A&P1 WE ARE DOING A FETAL PIG. I MANAGED TO DO IT BECAUSE I BLOCKED MY FEELINGS DURING THE TIME THERE. I CONVINCED MYSELF THAT THE ANIMALS DIES OF A NATURAL DEATH AND NOTH FOR LABORATORY PURPOSES :chuckle

SERIOUSLY, IT WILL HELP YOU A WHOLE LOT. JUST GO IN DO YOUR STUFF AND DON'T EVEN DISCUSS IT. I KNOW IT IS DIFFICULT BUT HEY IT IS ALL PART OF THE PACKAGE. I DARE SAY YOU'LL DO JUST FINE :)

Congrats, Jessica!!! :balloons:

THANK YOU PEACHY. I AM MOTIVATED. IT IS A HUGE CHANGE CONSIDERING THAT I JUST FINISHED ORGANIC AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY ( I HATED IT:chuckle ).

AM TOTALLY READY FOR A&P1. JUST TRYING TO MAKE IT WHILE HOLDING 2 PART TIME JOBS, AND VOLUNTEER WORK....OH AND MY HUSBAND OF COURSE :rotfl:

SO GLAD TO BE PART OF THE CLUB. THANK YOU KINDLY ALL.

Anyways, not sure if this will help that much, but something I'm trying to do is learn the prefixes and suffixes associated with anatomy (Those of us with Marieb have the lists in the opening and closing pages of our books). If any of those using different books don't have this, let me know and I'll be happy to type it up for you in the next week or two. I really think that by learning the prefixes and suffixes, it will help us look at a word and KNOW what it relates too--does this make sense?

PEACHY, WE BOTH HAVE THE SAME BOOK EXCEPT FOR THE LABORATORY MANUAL. MINE IS THE FETAL PIG VERSION NOT THE CAT VERSION :uhoh3:

ANYHOW, I DID THE SAME THING YOU DID. I STUDIED THE BLUE PAGES (PREFIXES AND SUFFIXES TO BE BETTER PREPARED. IT WAS SORT OF TO REFRESH MY MEMORY. MY SCHOOL DOES NOT REQUIRE MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY FOR NURSING BUT DOES FOR MEDICAL ASSISTING PROGRAM  ......BUT I DECIDED TO TAKE IT ANYWAYS. IT HAS HELPED ME TREMENDOUSLY. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE.

GOTTA GO TOO, JUST DROPPED IN TO SAY HI AND RESPOND TO SOME THREADS. :Melody: I OWE.....I OWE.....SO OFF TO WORK I GO :chuckle

GOOD LUCK, AND KEEP UP THE HARD WORK

I don't know what your books you are using are. But, I found a book that really has been helpful to me. You can find it at Barnes and Nobles. Check it out and have a cup of coffee in the store. If it helps great. Its called Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology fourth edition, by Valerie C. Scanlon and Tina Sanders. It also comes with a workbook.

Orginally I got the workbook of Ebay, it was so good, and I was using it to study as the diagrams were awsome. So, I decieded to get the book to go with it.

I am scheduled for my test June 13th. Wow will I be excited to pass. Of cource in Excelsior we can schedule or reschedule our tests, its one advangte of distance learning. My A & P class is a 6 credit class and I have been studying it for 3 months, and am feeling much more confident after getting my hands on these books.

You may be able to still get the workbook on ebay, I got mine for $5.

Thanks for the comments about my little ones. :)

Anyone have any tips on how to study when you're really tired? lol

hello to everyone!

i'm also taking a&p i this summer. i'm using hole's 10th edition. i love the book's website. my first class was yesterday. there is so much information to cover in a short time. it makes me very nervous! we have our first quiz tuesday and so much homework due! i just keep telling myself to take it one day at a time.

some advice for those of you who have not started class yet - start reading now! i had already read the first chapter which has helped a lot! what really has me worried is the chemistry. i've never taken a chemistry class and i'm feeling a little lost in that area.

*good luck to everyone!*

OUTLOUD: Read outloud, Do two pages then take a break to throw in a load of laundry, do two more pages, take another break and empty the dishwasher. Movement helps, coffee does too. :)

Or take a 5 min break and read a couple answers on these threads
