A&P I Fall 2008

Hey everyone! I'm a busy mom (of a 5 1/2 month old), and I'm quite nervous for the fall semester. I'm taking A&P I and a CNA course. I'd like to open a discussion for others to tell me about their A&P I class...advice they'd like to give...and for those of us who haven't taken it yet, your feelings on the upcoming semester. I could definitely could use the support!

Specializes in Geriatrics,.

Candycane I'm taking A&P I this fall myself. After this I will be taking A&P II and Micro spring and summer 08 these are my only pre-rec I have left to take before I apply for NS. I just say to the upcoming semester is that if you want it bad enough no one can stop you and put all your blood, sweat, and tears into it and you will come out on stop.

Good luck to you and everyone else

Wow! That's actually my plan w/ classes, too! We'll have to keep in touch and keep eachother motivated! Thanks for the advice...so true!

I just completed A&P 1 and I can say it was hard work but very doable and I actually enjoyed it at times. I took a summer course so we went really fast but I stayed on top of everything by studying everytime I got a chance. The teacher gave really good outlines which helped a lot. My advice is to just study as much as you can and make concepts. Memorization helps but you really have to understand what your reading. Outlines help a lot and I've heard many people say making flashcards helped them.

You'll do just fine as long as you study.

Hi,

I plan to take A&P I then II then Microbiology over the next 3 semesters to apply for LPN to RN transition in Fall 2009. I took these classes 10 years ago when I just finished my LPN and wanted to do my RN right away but marriage, family, and the military (living overseas) have kept me from doing it until now. I plan to take them online at Edukan - seems as though many have taken these classes through them. From what I remember the first time around - keep up with the reading. It also helped when I transcribed my notes into outline form, rather than just studying from my jumbled notes taken in class. Best of luck!

Specializes in Cardiac.

I'm right there with you folks. Starting on prereqs this fall. A+P I, Nutrition, Sociology, and Human Growth and Dev. Also taking a math class that I'll need in a few years for my RN-> BSN degree.

It's been 10 years since college, 15 hours is a lot, but make hay while the sun shines =)

Planning on starting Nursing classes Fall 2008, with only them to worry about. GL to you all.

Your post title says "A&P I Fall 2008". I think you mean Fall 2007...am I correct? Anyway, whenever you do take A&P, whether it be this Fall or Fall of 2008, I would suggest lots of studying, and spend lots of extra time in the lab. We had 6 human cadavers in our lab, and I spent many, many extra hours with those cadavers (and looking at slides under the microscope) studying and trying to really learn everything, inside and out, no pun intended;). They were my favorite classes, but it took a lot of work for all the info to really sink in....I'm kind of a slow learner though. Good luck with everything.

Hello everyone! I'm thankful because I made some good friends in Micro and Chem last spring who are also future nursing students and we are all taking A&P together this fall as well. It's great to have people there to share study guides, or notes if you miss a day. I suggest trying to befriend a least one person on the first day and exchanging emails.

My friend took A&P last fall but got a C so she is taking it over with us. She has all her old study guides(that the teacher provided, apparently she just didn't study them) so it'll be nice to have those in advance to look over as I'm reading through the book. One of the best pieces of advice my straight A nursing student sister (whew, that was long) gave me was to made a study guide as I'm reading so I really retain the information. Meaning, to write out the important topics as I'm reading them. I find this is a good way for me to study because then I am not scrambling to get all my information together right before an exam and I can usually condense it so I can take it with me everywhere to look over.

Back to A&P, We are all buying our books when they first get to the bookstore 3 weeks before classes start so we can get familiar with the material.

For anyone who has taken A&P and is in NS now; Have you found that this was the most important prereq? My sister, a nursing student, has said that understanding A&P is very important for success in her classes. I really plan on studying my butt off for this class..... Plus, don't yall think anatomy is just kind of interesting? I used to take business classes and would get SO bored studying. I never got bored studying micro and I think the same will go for A&P.

Good luck to EVERYONE!!

Yes, I meant Fall 2007....I totally realized that mistake once it was too late! :) Anyways, thanks for the advice. I'm a very visual person, so I bet that will really help me! Good luck w/ your classes, too. And if you are ever overwhelmed and need to complain to someone, I'm here for ya!!! :)

Like the rest of you, I will be taking A&P 1 this coming fall.

I too have found that making a study guide (taking notes) while reading helps a lot. I then take my notes and type them out in Microsoft Notebook 2007 in outline form, while elaborating and going over anything that doesn't make sense. It's nice becuase you can move passages around, import pictures and draw diagrams in the program.

I have already gotten my text at a cheaper price than what I would have gotten at the bookstore. I was able to find out what text we will be using by looking up my class section number, and logging onto the college website and clicking on Bookstore, then imputing all the class info in. After doing that, the virtual bookstore will tell you what books you need for what class, and how much they will be. The down side was that they didn't give me the IBSN number, so I had to research it a bit with the author and edition number. Geez, even with the cheaper rate I was able to find, my texts cost over $200.00! I compared prices with Amazon, Ebay and Half.com, and saved $60 bux. Just a little info for those who want some advice on getting books early.

Some swear the Anatomy and Physiology coloring books are a big help. We used them in our Massage Therapy program at Bryman and personally I felt they were very time consuming.

Someone had suggested to study up with Chemistry in preperation for A&P in another thread I had seen. Since I had some exposure to A&P at Bryman, I took this advice to prepare myself. So far, reviewing Chemistry is helping me understand the physiology I had learned and makes so much more sense to me now. It really is fundamental, and I highly recommend it for a thorough understanding. If interested in picking up a chemistry book, I recommend CHEMISTRY: AN INTROCUTION TO GENERAL, ORGANIC, & BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY (EIGHTH EDITION) by TIMBERLAKE (probably one of the older editions). I used to avoid chemistry like the plague, but once I started to really understand it, I found it very enjoyable.

I am more than excited about starting A&P prereqs this coming fall. I have been waiting for this since my son was born. Single mom with two year old son! I hope we can all be a support for eachother as I hear this will be a tough class. Goodluck to us all.

A&P I, College Algebra (for that RN-BSN thing later as you said), General Psych, and College Comp I here.

Sounds like you have the same pre-reqs and are only a few miles north of me (i'm in wpb). Are you going to PBCC?
