Hello, this is my first time writing a post but I've been reading for awhile.. I am currently in a&p and I'm struggling.. My grade right now is an A- but our midterm is in 2 weeks and I don't feel confident that I'm gonna pass.. I have searched the forum and used some of the ideas but I'm just not getting it.. I make flashcards, I'm using quizlet, watching videos, I skim through the chapter, then read it again while taking notes then I type my notes, then make the important parts of those notes into flashcards. I study from the time I get out of work until midnight almost every night (taking breaks in between) & I'm still just not getting it..I have 4 chapters to read for next week and I haven't even read this weeks chapter or finished taking notes on last weeks chapter..
I do work full time and have 3 kids but I should be able to do better than this.. I'm stressed to the max over this class as I don't know what im doing wrong! Nursing is all I wanna do but a&p has me thinking its not the right field for me..
Any advice would be so appreciated. Thank you..

I could understand this post if you were failing, but you have an A. Stop worrying! You ate worrying needlessly. I liked quizlet and just take it one step at a time with studying. There is really no need to put tons of hours into it. You just need to take it chapter by chapter with the studying. I think you are freaking yourself out. I see it all the time in my nursing program. If its all you focus on you are going to get burned out and either quit or fail.
I think I'm freaking out because I know how important it is to nursing and although I'm doing good in the class so far I don't feel like I'm retaining the information.. I want to pass the class but I also want to remember the information.. And yes I am totally freaking myself out, I worry too much..

Don't worry about retaining, just worry about passing. That's what reviews/refreshers are for, later on down the road when you want to recall what you learned in AP. I also have an A and I think it's because the info is interesting and I know it will actually come in handy later :) Don't psych yourself out!
BUT something that helps me remember things longer: songs, funny anectdotes, real life scenarios.

Search for Professor Fink on youtube. He posts videos of his lectures, they are very in depth and easy to understand. When I had a section in A&P that I was having trouble grasping I would search for videos on that subject that he put out. It often cleared things up for me.
Also.. And I think this is huge... Breathe. A&P is tough and can be extremely stressful but you are doing well and I am sure you will continue to do well. Stressing and worrying don't do anything to improve your situation. A calm clear head however, can make a world of difference. Don't forget to take care of yourself.
I failed my first test of A&P2, It was over the brain, neurons, and neurotransmitters. I have never ever failed a test in college, I was distraught to say the least. But I buckled down and ended the term with an A in the class.
Keep your chin up and keep us posted

Kahn Academy is great. It is free, and when you get into med surg, Greg Linares. You have an A- why are you stressing?

How important is reading the whole chapter for your class? In my class reading the whole chapter is not necessary and just bogs my mind down with too many details. Does your professor hand out study guides or anything? My A&P grade went from barely holding onto an A- to having a solid A once I figured out what to study rather than studying everything. This may not work for you as everyone learns differently. The reading may well be completely necessary for your class. But it's possible that it's not and you're studying everything rather than what you specifically need to be studying.
Also, acronyms have been a life saver. I use them all the time for memorization.
thank you everyone for your comment and suggestions. I will look up those videos on youtube. I'm not one of those people that can learn from reading. I have to see it or do it in order to get it. I don't read the whole chapters. I skim it once, then again to take notes pulling key phrases and what I believe explains the particular section I am reading. I also take notes in lab, since this is an online class he spends the first half of lab going over things. I figure whatever he goes over in lab is especially important so I make sure to know that. He did hand out guides and the case studies for our midterms and finals.
I know i'm stressing myself out but I cant help it. I know I have to have an A in this class ( and a&p 2 and micro) in order to get into the nursing program and science is not my best subject so I worry.

Good day, hopingstccfall2015:
A- is a very good place to be for the mid term. What I found helpful for AP (1 and 2) lectures is to review objective points, go over how well I know them, make sure I've done any practice questions through and at the end of the chapter. I would also try to find resources associated with the book to ask me questions. The more I tested myself to show I got the material, the better I was able to do on tests. While I'm not sure if I'll be able to read everything come the RN program, for AP (1, 2), I did read every chapter vs. skim. For lab, I took a lot of pictures, composed my own study guides, etc. I also found spending time in our school's learning center (model room, talking with tutors) to be helpful. Lastly, if you can find a small group (no more than 5) of classmates to have very focused study time, that can be of help.
Thank you.

For A&P, I made lists. I would bring the lesson up into sections. Example. Bones. there are 206 named bones. That is alot to learn, but easy if they are broken into sections. Example, the topic is Bones and tehre are 2o6 in 2 groups, Axial and appendicular. Axial , 80 bones, 3 sections, Cranial, Thorax, Vertebral. Then I would break down the three sections. Cranial 2 sections, Cranial bones and facial bones. Then Cranial Bones, 8 bones (2 paired and 4 single) 2 parietal bones, 2 temporal bones, frontal bone, occipital bone, shphenoid bone, ethmod bone. Knowing how many there are suppose to be, helps when trying to verify that you remember them all. then Facial bones, etc
Breaking it down into eat able sections makes it doable. Wither it's body systems, muscles, etc.
When I was learning bones, I learned the sections first and how many bones where in each section. Took like 2 minutes. Then I took a branch and worked on it. Didn't take long at all. Written Like I have it, it looks like alot of work, but it really wasn't.
