I am a little bored right now-taking only general ed courses this semester. I already bought a Medical Terminology book and worked through it on my own. Next semester I will have A & P and Microbiology. I was wondering if there were any books any of you would recommend right now to kind of get a start on it. I was thinking along the lines of "A & P for Dummies" or "Microbiology Made Incredibly Easy" or something like that. What do you all think?

hoppermom3-

Human Anatomy and Physiology by Elaine N. Marieb is a good one to start off with. Its concise, has good illustrations, and she keeps the physiology pretty simple. I think you can pick this one up at any borders or barnes & noble.. you could probly find a cheap one on ebay.. If you are a big fan of illustrations, it doesnt get better than Frank Netter.

I have a great Anatomy and Physiology book by Elaine Marieb I would be more than happy to sell to you. I bought it a few years back, but then ended up taking a different professor who wrote his own textbooks. It's a previous edition, but a great book nonetheless. Other than that, I would recommend the coloring books. There are several of them that were helpful to me. The ISBN's of them are: 0-8053-5086-1 and 0-321-03663-8

Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple by Galdwin. Cute illustrations. Easier to understand than the school text.

Thanks...I ordered the coloring books from Amazon.com.

We use Marieb as well.

I also have the Cliffs QuickReview for A&P and I really like it

ISBN 0764563734 Its like $9 or something.

For me Microbiology IS incredible easy so I wouldn't recommend anything for that.

I second Microbiology made Ridiculously Easy. Not only do nursing students use it as a review text, but also student doctors. Can't lose with that one.

I purchased A&P Made Incredibly Easy! ISBN 1-58255-043-3.

It helped alot.

- So you want to get a jump on A&P.

- Look up Hole's Anatomy Website.

- Print out the exams, and study notes (outlines).

- YES!!! You will cover all 24 chapters in two semesters. Now you see why everyone panicks on the first day of class.

- The A&P books are quite expensive.

- I paid US$220.00 for Hole's Anatomy -- the lab manual came with the book.

- BTW/ Do not loose your lab manual. They cost US$100.00 to replace.

- Sorry about all the posts - ideas keep popping in.

- Anatomy & Physiology is pretty standard across the board. I would start with the lecture outlines provided in the Hole's Anatomy site.

- I would stick with general terms/definitions.

- Do not start going crazy with learning all the body parts. The reason I state this --- most professors hit up a particular subset at any one time. Meaning -- don't memorize all the bones --- as you may only need to learn half of them. Unless you have the professor from hell.

- I would go to college and ask for a copy of the syllabus. Will give you a chance to possibly meet with professor. And no, it will not affect your grade or anything like that.

- In A&P it all comes down to how well you can regurgitate facts on exams.

to add to what John posted, if the school won't give you a copy of the syllabus, sometimes you can find it online if the school has a course catalog that is online. we did this for my husband's differential equations class to find out what calculator he needed and so we had time to shop around.

We used Marieb's A & P as well. I bought the coloring book for it but it didn't really help me that much. I am more of a flashcard, answer the questions at the end of the chapter kind of learner. I also wouldn't start trying to memorize EVERYTHING in the book either. However, it might do you good to get familiar w/ the more common parts of the anatomy, like the heart, the major bones, the kidney (God the kidney was a PITA to learn) etc, but don't kill yourself trying to learn it all! A & P is a tough class but I can honestly say that the 2 sections that I took of it were 2 of my most favorite and I have taken a lot of classes! :D
