Love the Concept- Will it be Respected?

Hi everyone. I love the concept of and I've been considering doing my MSN here, but I am concerned about putting in the money and effort for something that isn't respected. I've heard so many horror stories of HR directors shredding applications of people with degrees from schools like University of Phoenix and Devry, even though they hold the desired regional accreditation. I've heard it may also be difficult to transfer credits for doctorate and PhD degrees. Does anyone know if WGU will be offering PhDs in the future? Any and all opinions welcome.

Agree with Commuter, the only negative comments I hear about online education now a days come from old people that never even tried it, instead they were spoon fed their outdated education.

Wow.... as a nurse for over 27 years I am floored by your attitude of those of us who were "spoon fed" our education. I definitely was not spoon fed anything and yes i will agree there was not the technology that we did not have to learn in nursing school at that time. But any kind of nurse should be continually educating him/herself all the time. Yes there are old stogies out there that just want it to always be the old way. But there are also some of those young bunnies that want to tell you what they know just out of school. For instance, when they first came out with the portable ventilator that was the size of a small laptop computer I was amazed, now they are commonplace. Thanks for letting me vent.

You're right, poor choice of words on my part.

I don't think brick and mortar is spoon feeding - and I believe there are still many reasons to be weary of online education- a primary one being that unless exams are proctored- I there is no real way to know who is actually sitting for the exams! I am not against online eduction for the most part- but I don't feel it's necessarily equal (yet) to traditional schooling.

Have you done it?

WGU is not in the same category as DeVry or Univ of Phoenix. If their grading policy does not sit well with you, then find another program. It is not worth the worry between the time you graduate and the time you decide to apply to a grad program that insists on letter grades, to put yourself through that. Attend another school and then it will not be an issue for you.

I have taken many, many online classes. No, I don't think they are the same as in person classes- and there are only a couple where I would say I got much out of the course at all. I hear is different- which is why I'm considering it at all.

Good! Well, is a combination of proctored exams, papers, video assessments and presentations. Better than many other online programs that require weekly forum style participation.

I am am taking classes with . They send you a webcam and proctor you online. You have to position the camera so that your face, hands and keyboard are visible. They also remote into your computer so they can see if you are looking at online resources during your exam. And right before you take the test you have to turn the camera 360 degrees so the proctor can see the whole room. So it's doable. If you don't want to take the exam like that they have a list of proctored test sites in your area. You can take an exam there if you want. Believe me. They have thought of everything.

I have sat for all of my exams at a testing center where my identification is checked and a proctor observes as I am testing.

I am very happy with . It's lots cheaper than most programs, they are fully accredited, and my favorite thing, it's self paced. I can whiz through classes that are easier for me, and take my time on things that are challenging. I'm not stressed by deadlines so if my life is crazy, I can relax and know that once things calm down, I can settle down and focus on my studies. It keeps me from resenting it when life gets in the way. I have a better attitude and I'm more relaxed, and therefore, my grades are so much better.

I didn't pass evidence base before the end of last term and when the new term stated on November 1 it just carried over I din't get a fail on my schedule or transcript.

Have you looked at your unofficial transcript? Because for the courses that I didn't finish by the end of my term, but had to do the following term, it clearly says "Not Passed" for the original term in which the class was assigned. The following term, though, the class is listed again with "Passed".

The exception to that is if you have submitted your final task before the last day of the term and it's not graded before the term ends, once it passes, they will retroactively pass you for the class.

It's possible that their prelicensure program has different policies.
