Applicants to GWU's ABSN 2011

U.S.A. Washington DC

Published

Hi! Just wanted to start another thread relating to GW's accelerated nursing program. Is anyone applying? They extended the deadline to March 1st and wondering if there weren't many applicants or they just allowed for more time? I'm sending mine in this weekend and am excited!

Dlrosen, thanks for the info. I think they are going to take 75 applicants this year according to their website.NCLEX rates look good, but sometimes I hear that schools eliminate their "weakest links" and have only top students to graduate and take NCLEX. I am planning to work pretty hard but I hope they don't have unrealistic expectations.

Oh, well I guess we are going to find out pretty soon. I am planning to go visit Shenandoah's campus and make a more informed decision when the time comes.

I do not like uncertanities!

Dlrosen: I remember you from the Western U forum! I just got an email from GWU that said my information is under review by the commitee and I sent in some more supp. stuff. I was wondering if you had heard back from SMU or Western? I got in at SMU and I was waitlisted for Rush. I hope to hear back from all schools by May so I can make some time to move!

Hi ilnurse! I recognized your SN as well. =) I have not heard from SMU, so I'm assuming I did not get in since I was not offered an interview. Oh well. I'm a little disappointed as I really want to stay in the area to be with my family and boyfriend. But I can't have everything, right? ha. I'm waiting to hear from Western U, but like I said, I'm not too thrilled about the price. I got into Catholic University and Creighton University. I'm waiting to hear from others as well, so I know what you mean. As of now though, GWU is my top choice out of my current options. =)

Does anyone have any questions they would like me to ask the current GWU student before I get in contact with her? Please let me know. I'll probably get in contact with her by tomorrow evening, so just let me know. =)

Dlrosen: Can you ask her about reimbursment programs that are offered. Also can you see how easy it is to transition to a Master's program.

As for the cost, i'm more worried about SMU than Western. With Western you are supposed to get a job after the 16 months pre licensure part and I'm sure you can find a hospitial that will work with you and help with tuition. Western may not sponsor one directly, but i'm sure some sort of arrangement can be worked out. I know Rush has an awesome one and I hope GWU you has one too!

Hello Everyone,

Here is some info I gathered from a student currently in the program:

1. What has been your experience so far in the program? Negatives? Positives?

This may sound cheesy, but I really do enjoy this program. It is very intense and stressful, (being completely honest, here), but I would have been foolish to not have expected that from this, or any other program similar to this one. Positive: The instructors are almost always available to tend to your questions/concerns, whether day or night, weekend, inclement weather.. whatever! If you need help, they make the best efforts to help you, as long as you are showing that you've been helping yourself first. Meaning, if you show that you've been putting forth the effort. Negative: THIS PROGRAM IS VERY TIME CONSUMING. I don't want to scare you, but there is a reason they suggest that you don't work during the duration of this program.

2. Where do most students live?

In this program, there are students that live all over the DMV (DC/MD/VA) area. There are some students that live down the street from the campus and others that commute from as far as West Virginia. Some people commute and carpool together and some take public transportation. The great thing about going to school in our area is that there is a free shuttle that will pick you up, and take you to campus from the West Falls Church metro station. The same shuttle also connects students from the main campus at Foggy Bottom to the Virginia Campus and back.

3. What is your current schedule? What are some other clinical sites other students have been placed?

Here is my schedule this semester:

Monday: clinical at the Virginia Hospital Center from 6:30-7p

Tuesday: Classes from 8:30-1:30p

Wednesday: Class from 8:30-10:30, then lab from 10:30-3:30p

Thursday: Class from 8:30-10:30

Friday: Clinical at GW Hospital from 2-10p

Last semester, I was at INOVA Loudon Hospital for long-term care and Virginia Hospital center for med/surg. This semester, I am at Virginia Hospital Center for med/surg, was at Fairfax Hospital for OB/Maternity and am now at GW Hospital for my psych clinical. Some people go to Prince William Hospital, or Reston Hospital for their clinical sites, as well.

4. How much time is spent in the Sim lab? How much time was spent in the Sim Lab before going to clinical sites?

Before being sent to your clinical rotation sites, you will learn the skill fundamentals. For the first couple of weeks, you will be practicing and reviewing skills in lab that you will need to know for your clinical sites. The lab area simulates a real hospital and the mannequins react like real people. They blink, they have hear rates and respiratory sounds, they bleed, urinate and blink their eyes, and they even react to certain complications the way people would react like have a seizure, code, or need to have an IV. Lab is very helpful in preparation to your clinical sites, and therefore you will spend much of your time practicing.

5. Anything about reimbursement programs or scholarships that students receive?

Currently, the only scholarship that I am aware of is the Cohn scholarship that offered $1000 to two of our classmates. Whether or not that scholarship will be offered to your class, I am not sure. However, if you can find a private scholarship through a hospital, that may be the most beneficial. I am not currently aware of anyone receiving financial assistance other than loans.

6. Do you know how easy it is to transition into the Master’s program since the last 12 units are counted as graduate units?

I am not sure as to the transition process to a master's program at GW. I imagine that with us taking graduate level courses that it may be helpful to our application process to a graduate program. Although I am not sure as to how nursing credits transfer, if you were interested at a master's program at GW, they may be more accepting of their own credits.

So there you go. I thought it was very helpful, and I actually heard from her very quickly, I just didn't post as it's been very busy. Hope it helps everyone else. =)

dlrosen: Do you think that you are going to go to GWU?

dlrosen--thank you so much for doing that and getting back to us. that's a lot of great news, i live right by west falls church metro station. I"ll have to look into that.

I got into Marymount and Johns Hopkins as well but Johns Hopkins is so much more expensive and I would not be able to live at home and my husband is applying to schools in VA, not MD.

So I'm def leaning towards GW...what about you dlrosen?

As of now, I am going to GWU. I sent in my deposit ab couple weeks ago. I am still waiting for a few other schools, so we'll see. =D congrats on your acceptances to the other schools. That's awesome! I will be living with family who are in Lorton, so ill probably be commuting from there. =)

Hi all! I just heard back! I got in!! Woohoo!! I applied Feb 15, so for those of you who sent in your application around that time, you might be hearing soon too.

Would you mind sharing your undergrad gpa, undergrad school and major, prereq gpa and any other credentials you have (health care experience, advanced degrees etc?) No worries if you don't want to on these message boards...I totally undrerstand :-) just trying to figure out where I stand with GWU because I would LOVE to go there!! CONGRATS again!

Congrats as well to NYC! That is great news :) I had the same question about your stats if you don't mind sharing or messaging? I took A&P but I think they may have expired so I may be applying for next years class. We will see! My status says nursingcas not verified even though its been complete and ready for a while! We'll see, I'm trying to be patient with it :-)

Congrats, NYC!! That is wonderful news. =) do you think you are going to accept?

Specializes in Primary care.

Congrats,NYCgal. Great news! This style of notification is killing me. I would prefer to wait until end of April, and knowing they will let us know on a certain date would make it easier. I have no idea when I am gonna find out. just venting. I am sure some of you will understand and agree with me. Oh, well. Must study for my midterms anyway, can't really waste time whining about it.:anbd:
