UTA Spring 2012

Nursing Students Texas (UTA)

Published

Alas! Here I go again!;) This thread is dedicated to all hopefuls to either of the programs- AP or traditional. Let's partake in the sharing of ideas, suggestions, and/or insight in the "intricacies" of this nursing program. Former grads, new or current students are encouraged to chat. Knowledge is power, indeed! Continued blessings and success to all! Good Luck!:D

Hi everybody. I found this program to be somewhat shady when I dealt with the advisers. So I did a little research and found that the program is marketed by a private company called Academic Partnerships

http://www.academicpartnerships.com/Home.aspx

They receive from 50-80% of the money students spend on the online courses according to this article.

This is probably the reason why it is so hard to get straight answers from the advisers. I know many people were NEVER told about the importance of working at a partnered facility. The advisers made it seem that if you made the grades, you would be competitive. However, I believe only 10 un-partnered applicants were accepted last fall, and now it seems even many of the partnered applicants who were pretty much guaranteed by advisers that they would get in if they did well, are not getting in.

The lack of transparency and the conflict of interests seems to border on fraud. It is a shame because, from what I hear, the actual nursing program is great. I know this program is working out great for some people, but many were conned out of quite a bit of money.

@Sherri86, no I am not partnered. I start Jan 12, its been a long wait but am so thankful for finally getting accepted. I wish you luck. I am in Katy area if you ever want to get together by email or whatever. I have a friend in the program, she is a senior 2, graduates in May. The program is fantastic, a lot of work, and accelerated. So, be prepared. The worst part is waiting for your acceptance. There are so many applicants as you see here on the blog. I try to keep my negative thoughts to myself as I feel I would be jinxed otherwise, lol. I started taking classes in Jan 09.

@Katybusymom, I do not blame you for choosing UTHSC, they are a fantastic program, that was my next choice for fall application as I did not have nutrition or philosophy. Two more classes, ugh, plus I would need to retake my third HESI as they added Critical thinking component which I only had the UTA requirements and the A&P and Biology. So I am obviously starting UTA in Jan. Keep in touch, and best of luck in nursing school!

PHARM 3365 FOLKS: Has anyone in the online Pharm class been accepted to the AP program?

@Katycath, I'm so glad for you. I didn't start taking classes at UTA until April 2011 and was so thrilled to find them. I know that these blogs can be pretty negative, but I also know people are just venting. I love that we have this outlet because nobody really understands the frustrations of getting into nursing school unless they have been down that path. I would love to keep in touch with you and hopefully be following in your footsteps of being accepted in Fall. What would you attribute your acceptance too. I mean, since you are not partnered. Would you point to grades? Do you know where you will be for clinicals yet? I'm sorry I have so many questions, I am just so glad to talk to someone from the Houston area that got accepted and is NOT partnered lol!

When I found out that it was unlikely that I would get in at UTA, I started making a back-up plan. I fell hook, line and sinker for everything UTA told me about the AP BSN program. It was only after I was deep into my prerequisites that I found out the lack of clinical sites in Houston. I took Nutrition in addition to everything else so that I could apply and be more competitive at UTHSC. I am SO glad that I did.

Keep your head up. I'm not partnered and I got accepted:)

Is your friend in the AP BSN program in Houston? If so, what hospital?

Does anyone have any advice about the Pharm final? I have a 74 right now and am terrified of taking the final. If I dont get a 70 in the class I cant start the nursing program in January! If anyone has any suggestions let me know. I noticed people saying that the final is based off of the test questions? Does that mean the exact test questions will be on the final?

Also, any advice for the patho final?

@BJBailey - I am in the online Pharm class right now and I have been accepted to stat AP BSN program in January 2012. Let me know if you find any additional information out about the online final. I am barely holding on to my A and desperately want to keep it! EEK!

on the Pharm final MAKE SURE you remember to study Chapters 36 and 37 and also Module 13, in addition to exams 1-5. This is stated on the course calendar by week 9 (I think). This is extra stuff that we have NOT been tested on yet. I confirmed with Ms Todd that this stuff will be on the final. Since the final counts as 25% of our overall grade I don't want anyone to not see that extra stuff and have a shock on the final. We have had enough "surprises" in this class! For the Patho final, I am just going off of everything she listed as study tools. Her podcasts are extremely helpful for concepts you're unclear about. I am curious if previous quizzes will be of any help???

My suggestion for the pharm final is simply to review the previous exams... I am thinking several questions from each exam will find their way on there and then questions from the new stuff mentioned... Do not stress - we have made it this far - we will make it through the final!!!!

Did y'all see the post from the academic coach? I am really confused about my grade. Were the test questions thrown out or what? I feel like the grading in this class has been a little unfair. Anyway hopefully we can all pull through and get a good grade on the final!
