UTHSC Traditional BSN Spring 2014 Applicants

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I have seen many threads for previous applicants for past semesters to the UT Houston School of Nursing. I wanted to start one myself as I am applying for the spring 2014 traditional BSN and have yet to find a thread for it. Although I opened it for applicants, I would also encourage previous applicants, current/previous students, and applicants for other semesters at UTHSC to join in and share in this exciting time!

When I went to the information session last August, they said they would give a few days past the deadline for the HESI scores to be sent to them. This was only if you took the HESI within the last few days before the application deadline. I started my application and paid the fee before I took the HESI. On the To Do list on the application it showed I needed the HESI scores. When we spoke with an adviser, they said to go ahead and start the application because when you start sending your transcripts, there would be a "file" started...a place for them to put your transcripts and scores. The information sessions are VERY helpful! I highly recommend going if you can. The next one is August 1 at 1:30. A fellow classmate and I are going again just to make sure nothing has changed.

Does anyone know anything about receiving a letter from UTHSC informing them if they have met the pre-requisites...or what may be needed? I think I saw something about this on another blog for UTHSC Fall Applications.

arobbins2020, I got the transcript evaluation letter a few days ago! They had left out a bunch of my classes because they overlooked one of my transcripts. But they were quick at replying to my email and got it all fixed! The letter tells you what you have taken and what you still need as well as all of your GPAs that they have on file.

WOw! Bravo ! I am about going to take Hesi, but I am so nervous. The most nervous parts are critical thinking and reading because English is my second language. Do you have any keys to help me over come these two part. Thank you so much !

The reading was a lot like the test booklet questions, only longer. My advice would be to practice those. The way I did them was I read the entire selection of reading once over. Then I read the question, then I read the selection of reading again, carefully looking for the answer. Make sure you can support the answer with the text. (Make sure you aren't just inferring the answer, make sure it's specifically supported).

As for the critical thinking, I'm really not sure how to prepare for that one. It's kind of common sense type stuff. As in, help someone who is in more critical condition before someone who isn't. (Except, more detailed obviously.) A lot of that section was just me going with my gut!

(sorry for the late reply!)

Compare Uthsc SON and TWU Houston...

(1) First of all, which school has a higher tuition. (2) Hypothetically, if you get accepted in both (UThsc and TWU Houston) which one would you choose and give a reason or two.

I've tossed this option around as well. Assuming I don't win the lottery beforehand, I am leaning more towards UTHSC.

I hear that they are both challenging and reputable schools. However, I do consider that TWU is a historically female college and I wonder if the program is inherently biased/geared towards a female student-body, which isn't "wrong or unfair"... it's just part of the game.

Being unfamiliar to Texas, I also look at UTHSC as the Harvard of nursing schools (in Texas) and I find myself easily discouraged by this. This is something that I will just have to get over, despite my absolute loathing of competition.

On the other hand, I feel that TWU, given that it is predominantly composed of females, will provide a learning environment more suited to me. I've found that female students tend to be more organized, less confrontational, helpful, academically driven, and less intimidating (as opposed to competitive meatheads that I see all too often in professional programs). Oh, and they smell nice.

If that doesn't get me into TWU, I don't know what will.

I guess it all comes down to which school has the most-awesomest scrubs.

Also, I wonder if applying to TWU as a male provides me with some mysterious minority advantage, or is this a negative quality?

Honestly, both are great schools. So I guess whichever one gives me the most financial aid is the one I will be going to. You know, IF I am fortunate enough to get into both!

Pretty sure UT Houston is cheaper. UT Houston is 4 consecutive semesters of 16 months. TWU is also 4 semesters but I can't tell whether there's a summer break or not? Anyone know for sure?

I agree with your opinion that UT is the "Harvard" of Texas Universities LOL (die-hard UT fan). I have had first hand experience as a patient of a student of a male TWU student nurse. At the time, I was toying with the thought of going back to school for nursing and I inquired as to his outlook on going to TWU. He actually liked it but did say it is very competitive and a tough program. I wouldn't count TWU out! You never know how things could turn out!

I have compared prices of both and gathered several opinions from previous grads of UTHSC. UTHSC is cheaper. I have had mostly positive opinions from previous grads. The one not so positive opinion wasn't really all that bad. She said that because it IS the University of Texas, there is a sort of political stigma put on the students...an expectation of UT being the best. BUT, overall, she said the program was good.

A positive to both TWU and UTHSC is that they are both in the Houston Medical Center. From personal experience, when finding a job in the healthcare community, it's often who you know that helps to get your foot in the door. With that being said, most clinicals are in the Med Center and you are exposed to potential employers.

I would apply to both! You never know what is in store for you!

I have asked a recent grad (June 2013) and she said that summer is counted as one of the semesters. There is not a summer break. So if we get in starting in the Spring 2014, we will graduate the end of Spring 2015!! I find that rather AWESOME!!

Not to change the subject, but I just finished my summer classes at lone star so I had my last transcript sent to UTHSC about 1 week ago. I kept seeing it on my to do list, so I called to make sure they received the transcript. They said they did receive it, but it will not be removed from my to do list until I finish my last 2 classes (stats and eng II) in the fall.

Anyhow, I asked them when I can expect a transcript evaluation and this is what I was told: once your HESI scores are in, they will look to see if you meet the scores they are looking for and if you do, they will request a GPA evaluation and you will receive one in the mail.

I don't know how to take this...do they mean if you meet the minimum 75% they want on all sections then they will request a GPA eval? OR do they mean they won't do the eval unless you meet the test scores they are really looking for? I mean, my scores aren't THAT bad:

Math - 94%

Reading Comprehension - 96%

Vocabulary and General Knowledge - 90% Grammar - 96%

Anatomy and Physiology - 96%

Critical Thinking - 900

Learning style: Cognitive/Analytical

Personality style: Creative/Leader

I took my HESI on may 26, so now I am freaking myself out. Has anyone received a transcript eval? If you did, when did you take your HESI? What were your scores? Ahhhh! I don't know what to think...
