UTHSC-Houston Fall 2012 Applicants

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello everyone! This thread is for everyone applying to the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. I believe they will be accepting applications from January 15-April 1, so the sooner the better! Their admission requirements are pretty standard:

Minimum Pre-Req Gpa: 2.75

Minimum Science Gpa: 3.0

Minimum HESI A2 score: 75% or higher on all required sections - math, reading comprehension, vocabulary/general knowledge, grammar, anatomy and physiology, critical thinking.

My info is really not that competitive, but I'm going to give it a shot anyways -

Pre-Req Gpa: 3.30

Science Gpa: 3.0 (Barely cutting it! :crying2: )

Overall Gpa: 3.28

Hesi score: 93.3% overall, with my lowest score being a 90.

My gpa is not the best, but I still have 3 more classes to finish this semester, and I'm aiming for all A's! I think the best thing I have going for me is my HESI scores.

Anyone else planning on applying? What are your stats? Any questions? Lets hear them, and good luck to all who are applying!

May I add my :twocents: ?

I'm pretty sure they look at your class schedule. Full time class schedule I mean. Since this is going to be intense studying they have to take into account those who can handle a full load of classes. Nice stats don't look as good if the person did not have a full time schedule at the time, I think.

The time at which you applied or took the HESI is definetely not a factor. I applied on December and took the HESI... Ejem... The day before the deadline (I hope no one tries to stone me here. I'm just being honest). And I already saw someone with better scores than mine and better stats than mine...

And yeah it seems I'm in. Just have to complete my to do list and the 8 things before admission... And find out how the heck I'm gonna do to work full time and study full time

ps. I'm at work right now. I work night shift at a hospital.

I applied the earliest possible (which was September-august I think) and had my HESI done. And I was one of the first ones to get a green check (last name C), so I don't know if my early application had anything to do with it. And my class schedule has fluctuated but has been generally below full time so I'm not sure if your schedule is an indicator of being accepter or not. Here's how many classes I've taken each semester (no summers): 1, 3, 4, 3, 2, 3, 2, 4.

But one semester I took 4 classes which were 15 hours total (more than the usual 12) and got A's in all the classes so maybe that was enough, but who knows.

I did apply at the beginning, like Warning Sign. I think my application was submitted by Nov 19th....... That is probably why it bothered me so much when the comments where originally made about taking the first applicants.

I have been taking a full school work load for the most part since starting back to school to pursue nursing almost 2 years ago.

*I registered in Summer 10 and took a 5 wk A&P1 course (I felt CRAZY  for that one) but I got an A...

Fall 10 - I took 3 classes (10 hrs)

*Spring 11 - I took 4 classes (11 hrs). It was that semester I decided to go for my BSN, I was already set to apply to the ADN program bc I was finishing up taking all my pre-reqs.

*That summer I registered for four 5wk mini's (12 hrs), but had to drop one bc my son got sick (finished 9 hrs).

Fall 11 - I took 4 classes (13 hours)

*Spring 12 - Taking 4 classes (12 hrs)

With all of these classes I have gotten nothing but A's except for a couple of B's in Gov't and Hist (Not my favorite online classes... lol)

Hope that maybe this information will help......

Oh wow Hemphia!! You are some hard working person!!

I had a heavy load when I was at HCC but worked part time only. Now I live on my own and actually have to take care of my mom so I was feeling pretty discouraged about this. But if you been doing it, it's possible.

Anyone already in who's been working and studying??

How is it?

Phanlange_angie - I have done all of this because this is what I REALLY want. Now I am sure you can see why I was kind of insulted by the upset insinuation of the first come first serve basis. I have done all of this while still being a Mom to a now rambunctious 2 year old (he was 8 months when I went back), a homekeeper, and a wife :) I cannot neglect my family... so I find time to study and make the grades required to be competitive.

Some days I see all the "kids" who work part time and don't do anything and have no other responsibilities other than going to school... And I wish that I could have done all this when I was younger..... But I know that my life would be no place near as perfect as it is now ;)

My life is NEVER still.... And I wouldn't have it any other way! I LOVE IT!!!!!

May I add my :twocents: ?

Maybe, but I'm pretty sure most everyone who applied is currently taking full time classes. I know I am. Plus, I've got some more abstract courses on my record like Trig, Physics, Organic Chemistry and Calculus AB/BC college credit from taking the AP exams. Made all A's except in Orgo cause it's pretty ridiculous. I took A&P i &II in the same summer1 semester (made A's in both) and I took basic chem and Micro simultaneously (along with 2 other courses) and made all A's. I don't think FT status has much to do with it.

I am also a mother of two young boys. A 2 and 4 year old. I earned a Bachelors degree 18 years ago so most of the prereqs. were already completed with the exception of AP 1&2, nutrition, art appreciation, chemistry, and statistics. I managed to take night classes and when possible, an on-line class. I returned to school when my second son was only a few months old to take A&P 1 in a 5 week summer course, at night. So between work, wife, mother, and student I earned all A's in the remaining classes that I needed in order to fulfill the nursing prereqs. So you can imagine how frustrating it is to have worked so hard, sacrificed so much time with family to pursue something important and worthwhile only to be turned away and not know why.

Whoa, I hadn't checked the forum since yesterday afternoon...it seems things took a bit of a turn. I just wanted to put my 2 cents in. First of all, Hemphia, you have been very encouraging and supporting of everyone on the forum so thank you and congrats on getting in. Secondly, I don't think anyone that didn't get in has any resentment to those that did get in...I think our only resentments might lie in feeling like we did not have all of the information that we would have liked before making the decision to apply to the program or follow this career path. The school said they were looking at HESI scores and GPAs to make their decision, so I know I took that at face value. While everyone on here had great stats, there were people with better ones that didn't make the cut, so that proves that other mystery factors outweighed both of the stated factors. Whatever the other factors or criteria they are using, people just want to know...otherwise it is like signing up to run a marathon and no one telling you how long it is. What they are doesn't matter (different people have different opinions about what is "fair" criteria), what matters for those of us that didn't get in is that without knowing we can't make adjustments that improve our chances next time around. So, the quandary becomes, do we hope that these same criteria don't come into play for our next application? Not bloody likely since personal info, HESI scores, and GPAs remain constant (unless you are still taking classes). Self-improvement is second nature, who wants to hire someone that doesn't make every effort for self improvement?! Those of us that didn't get in now find ourselves in a difficult position because we have decisions to make on whether we keep chasing what in our minds has become the proverbial carrot. It is a risk assessment...do we blow more money on app fees, do we turn down job offers in our current careers? I went out and read some of the other AN forums and was actually shocked to read that people fresh out of nursing school were finding it very hard to get jobs and that the "nursing shortage" was only accurate in terms of experienced nurses (not new nurses), but that nursing schools were misrepresenting that info to lure in lots of applicants ($100 a pop) and students (16K a pop). I don't want to be someone's cash cow! I am not getting down on nursing school, I am just saying that for some of us not getting accepted may have been the greater blessing.

Phanlangie_Angie...I have been working and going to school, both full time for the past year. It hasn't been fun, i'll say that :-)

Hey guys! I just got my rejection letter in the mail so UTHSC is a no go for me. I am not at all discouraged and I am on my way to TWU for the Fall! I thank everyone on here for their encouragement through this process and I wish everyone the best of luck!

My Stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.9

Science GPA: 4.0

HESI: 96%

God has a plan for each of us and I'm so looking forward to what He has in store for me. I have prayed through this whole process that the Lord would open or close doors so that I would know what He wanted me to do. I thank God for closing this door yet having others open for me. I look forward to this journey! God bless you all!
