UTHSC-Houston Fall 2012 Applicants

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello everyone! This thread is for everyone applying to the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. I believe they will be accepting applications from January 15-April 1, so the sooner the better! Their admission requirements are pretty standard:

Minimum Pre-Req Gpa: 2.75

Minimum Science Gpa: 3.0

Minimum HESI A2 score: 75% or higher on all required sections - math, reading comprehension, vocabulary/general knowledge, grammar, anatomy and physiology, critical thinking.

My info is really not that competitive, but I'm going to give it a shot anyways -

Pre-Req Gpa: 3.30

Science Gpa: 3.0 (Barely cutting it! :crying2: )

Overall Gpa: 3.28

Hesi score: 93.3% overall, with my lowest score being a 90.

My gpa is not the best, but I still have 3 more classes to finish this semester, and I'm aiming for all A's! I think the best thing I have going for me is my HESI scores.

Anyone else planning on applying? What are your stats? Any questions? Lets hear them, and good luck to all who are applying!

When I called and spoke to someone about my acceptance she told me that I was accepted for the "generic" program. That was one of the factors that I was considering when I was considering them. I really didn't want the pacesetter program. It may not have kept me from accepting in the end, but it was a factor I was considering...... Sorry I cannot be more help. Maybe they were looking at learning styles as well as CT scores.... I have also heard that they really looked at the math and comprehension on the HESI. It would be nice if we knew...... but maybe they don't want us to know because they don't want everyone to model their ideal applicant... this way they don't have 600 applicants that are identical..... I don't know....

Thanks. Well generic could mean either, really. I think we're all a little stressed, mostly because of the purgatorial predicament in which many of us find ourselves. Are we in or not? Are we waiting for nothing or will answers come tomorrow? It's worse than NOT being accepted lol.

Regardless, it will be quite amusing if they do get accept the rest of the applicants this week. We can all laugh it up over how we nearly lost our minds waiting for the official word.

When I spoke to the woman on the phone she told me that it looks like I was accepted into the traditional. That is doesn't look like I am a pacesetter. On their website they call their traditional BSN generic and the other BSN as pacesetter. I HOPE I am traditional....

And FYI - for all of you still waiting... Here is something to help keep your chins up.... There are currently 43 members on the new FB group..... That being said... I know for a fact that atleast 5 of them are upperclassmen... if not more than that. It still looks like they have LOTS to accept into the program. Remember this is a new system that they are constantly doing updates and maintenance on..... I am sure more will see changes, that it is just a slow process on thier end....

There's at least 20 people in the Facebook group that are upperclassman...I'm one of them. The acceptance process is very slow at first and people were accepted into my class up until the first week of classes. I know that's not the ideal situation for anyone, but just know that anything can happen! Also, a lot of people had the same questions as y'all do about what they look for in selecting applicants when we went through this process just a few short months ago. Our personality/learning styles were all very different so it doesn't really seem like that is a deciding factor...

I know this is just more speculation, but I recalled Hemphia writing in an earlier post that at one of the information sessions they said they want to know you can handle the work load. Therefore, they look to see how many classes you have taken at once. To me, this would seem to indicate that they would also consider whether or not you have a previous degree? In the end, I think it is safe to say there are many more factors besides just GPA and HESI overall score. And, personally, I don't believe application order bears any weight. I didn't even take the HESI until three weeks before the application deadline and didn't submit my application or transcripts until approximately one and a half weeks before the deadline.

to everyone still waiting (and those wondering which program they were accepted into), we should be getting letters tomorrow! i know from two difference accounts that the letters were sent out yesterday (monday) so we should be getting them wednesday. remember, they are changing into a different system, so there is a chance that they haven't told you via the ut portal due to glitches, etc.

best of luck to everyone and i hope more people hear great news tomorrow! i know everyone has worked really hard. :w00t:

yes, @Julianne_Rader, that inference was definitely made at one of the information sessions (I was at the same session as Hemphia.) I'm sure they need to use other criteria, not just grades. In theory, if everyone had the same credentials, there would need to be criteria to determine who has an edge over another. (The theory holds similarly to applying for a job or membership to club - a situation many of us have been through on one end or another.) I'm sure many may think that's unfair, especially when there is no interview process. I don't know how much a 1st career Bachelors weighs in, but I would think it counts for something, especially in a competitive environment. I agree with @Hemphia - if Admissions were to tell every little secret to their process, the school would be less competitive because everyone would be doing the same thing to try to get in. It's in our nature to speculate why the waiting process goes on, believe me, I did my share and then some. I fed into some of the negative energy and had believed that they were informing people in the order of applications received or transcripts sent, or whatever I wanted to believe to make myself feel better. But like @Julianne_Rader, I took the HESI late - on New Year's Eve and my application was cutting it close because of transcript issues. I also didn't get my transcript eval until 2 weeks ago and it was wrong. All of that, and I got accepted as well. So who knows!!! It's not over yet! And tomorrow, the mail comes! I truly wish everyone the best of luck in this process and in your future. Don't give up hope. Don't give up on your dream.

And I would like to also point out...I recieved my transcript evaluation not that long ago (maybe 2-3 weeks) and it was wrong...and I got in. Also, I took the HESI late late December and sent in my application maybe a week before it was due.

I did contact the office and let them know that some classes were misplaced (it seemed to have happened a lot, almost everyone I have heard from had a mistake). However, I did not specify any of the classes.

So if you think because of mistakes on your transcript evalution may hold you back, don't give up hope!

Whatever their "x factor" is, it definitely isn't when you submitted your application. I am proof of this. I took my HESI right before Christmas and didn't send my application until Jan. 13th and I was still accepted.
