TCC Fall 2008 Applicants

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Anyone else out there looking to apply to TCC for admission in the Fall of 2008? I had applied and was accepted for the Spring class, but had to turn the spot down for personal reasons. I'm going to the information session on the 6th and will be applying for the Fall. My brother in-law started in January so I plan on pumping him for information every step of the way!

Yeah, it can be described as that. Just a lot of material in 7 weeks. Study your butt off and do lots of practice NCLEX questions thoughout the whole two yrs. Let me give you a word of advice though....don't listen to other people about teachers and how bad they may be.....form your own judgement about them. I always hated that and found that a couple of the teachers with the worst reputation were the nicest teachers I had.

I just graduated the TCC nursing program and boy oh boy....was it tough. I think our class is down to like 50 people out of the 110 that got accepted. It takes hard work and dedication to get through this program. And did I mention lots of studying? That too.

Congrats on getting through the program!! :) Do you feel like you're well prepared to get out in the real world now?

Thanks for the congrats. If you guys ever need advice, feel free to email me. Also join TNSA and take advantage of every possible resource there is for mentoring, etc. Yes I feel very prepared. I think TCC has a really good program. I believe they have prepared me very well. I will have a preceptor for a few weeks though, so that's very comforting to know. I've heard that nursing school is really just the foundation, that we learn much more when we actually become nurses and work on the floor. Of course, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that. Makes perfect sense. School isn't really ending....it's just really beginning if you know what I mean.

I had a mentor that was a couple of semesters ahead of me. Oh, I thank God I had her because she meant so much to me with her advice and encouragement. You really will need a lot of encouragement...it really helps get you through.

Remember......buy a couple of NCLEX books (Saunders is a good one) and start going over questions that pertain to the semester you're in. You won't succeed without looking at practice questions.

This is the second time I've heard this advice. Thanks for the brand recommendation.

What was the job search like for you? How soon did you have a job lined up? Did you or anyone you know of get positions in specialty units? I ask because I keep reading conflicting information on whether newbs can get onto those units right out of school. That, and I'm interested in working in the ICU.

I got a job very easily and so did most every one I know. I actually started a student nurse position at the beginning of my last semester. It's good to start job hunting after pedi/ob are over. You can get ahead of the game that way. There are several hospitals around that hire new nurses in speciality areas. I've just heard from several people that it's really not recommened because the assessment skills just aren't there....In critical care nursing, the assessment skills really need to be good to recognize subtle S/S. With that being said. I've heard nurses in the ICU areas say they just don't understand why their company will hire GNs in these areas. I'm sure you will do fine though. I think there is an extremely long internship (like over 4 months, I think) with these type of positions. They just won't "Turn you loose" for quite a while.
