Moving to dallas, tx from california, new grad RN, need advice!

U.S.A. Texas

Hi! My husband and I are planning to move to Dallas, TX . I am a new grad rn, ADN with no previous healthcare experience. I just want to know my chances of getting a job in Dallas? Do the hospitals welcome new grad RN's from other states such as California?

I am currently enrolled in an RN-BSN program, will that help me in finding a job in Dallas? I saw that Parkland Hospital and Texas HEB has GN internships starting in Aug 2013 and July2013 respectively, does anybody know if they take new grads from other states, or do they prioritize those who graduated in Dallas?

I would really appreciate any information. My husband is finishing up his Bachelor's in Bussiness Management, and we will move as soon as he graduates. We are tired of California and had heard so many great things about Texas, and we want to relocate to Dallas. My biggest concern is, will I be able to get a job there? Where we live right now, new grad rn's are having a really hard time getting a job, unless they know someone, its basically a lot of waiting.

Congrats on your decision to move to Dallas !!

I am completing pre-reqs to start a BSN program, so I don't have that much info on the current job market.

I can offer that the DFW metroplex has so many suburbs that have smaller hospitals that may be hiring ( i.e. McKinney, Allen, Plano, Keller, Denton, Rockwall, and the list can go on and on !! )

Good luck, and welcome to the DFW area.

Welcome to AN! The largest online nursing community!

Congratulations on your graduation! I moved your post to Texas nursing for best response!

DFW is not a good place for new grad ADN's at the moment. Most new grad hires are BSN holders. I do wish you luck though.

I am a California native and I moved to Dallas 9 months ago. I love it here! However, I have a BSN and had three years of experience when I came. My hospital does not hire ADN new grads, and while I can't say for sure about the other hospitals, I know it is a tough market. I would get your Texas license ASAP (the endorsement process from CA to TX was pretty quick and painless), and give yourself as much time as possible to find a job - it may take a while. Welcome to Texas!

The market is tough for both GNs and experienced nurses. I would say it is harder to find employment in a city compared to the suburbs due to the amount of GNs the different programs are putting out different times a year compared to the amount of jobs available. Most of those GNs will have their BSN, too, so the DFW hospitals will (probably) more than likely go for those candidates. It doesn't hurt to try, though.

I think you may have better luck looking for a job outside of downtown Dallas at the smaller hospitals in the suburbs.

I'm going to be graduating in May of 2014. I will also be moving to the DFW area. I plan to look for a hospital in a suburb. I just wanted to say hi to everyone and see if I can also get more information regarding the job market in Dallas and surrounding suburbs. I can't wait to move there and meet new people! My fiance and I are actually heading there this Spring Break to check it out and make sure we like it. :)

Hello! I am also a NG RN, ADN who relocated to the Dallas metro from out of state this summer. I started applying for jobs then and have still not received one phone call for an interview. And I've applied to tons of jobs. Have you received employment yet? Have you gained any more insight onto who hires new grad ADNs in this area?? Thanks!

New grad nurses are generally hired twice a year in the DFW area - start dates are June and January, with the application process, interviewing and offering of jobs happening anywhere from a few weeks to three months before the start dates. Hospitals in DFW only tend to hire new grads into internships. Very rarely will you hear of one hired for on-the-floor training.

Most of the area hospitals will not hire ADN grads anymore unless they are already enrolled and working on BSN. Parkland is the only exception. They will still happily hire ADN grads. Competition for jobs for new grads is fierce in this area due to having many MANY nursing schools right in the DFW area, both BSN and ADN programs. Therefore, for each job posting there are literally 100-300 applications. For this reason many of the area hospitals only post their internship openings for a day or two, then take them down due to overwhelming response.

The DFW medical scene is highly political and it is all about who you know. If you have no connections here, anticipate it taking much longer to find a hospital position than if you did clinicals and know some people. You will have better luck with home health agencies and some LTC, though even those are pickier now due to so many new grads needing jobs.

Best of luck. Watch the hospital websites closely for postings on their internships. The January start dates will be posted any time from now to December for applications. Most of them are very specific about who they want to apply, so read closely.
