Austin Community College (ACC)

U.S.A. Texas

Good morning allnurses.com viewers,

I just submitted my application to ACC for Spring 2009 and I am VERYYYY nervous. This program is so intimidating knowing it's past concerning waitlists and (though very doubtful) I wish to be accepted on the first attempt.

I am just wondering if anyone here in Austin has gone to the information sessions, talked to the chairman (woman), or has any information on what the waitlist is supposed to look like for Spring 2009.

Also, what ranking points is usually the cut-off for the waitlist? I have searched forums and some people have 45-50 ranking points (which is amazing and I congratulate you guys), but how many ranking points is it usually before they deny your admittance to the program?

Thank you for reading my post and I hope to hear from someone soon.

Sincerely,

FilipinOOO

p.s. this is my first post so go easy on me:saint:

I am completing my pre reqs this semester at ACC and I took the 5.5 week Anatomy last Summer. I loved it, I have three kids. So, the first step was setting up care for them, they stayed with grand parents for 3 weeks and then I hired a sitter for the other 2 weeks. The reason I am saying this, is that you need to be prepared to focus 100% of your time to studying. Personally, I feel like I have retained more from that class than any of my typical 16 week courses. I took Dr. ****** and she was great, I am currently taking ****** for Physiology and he is tough. I have a 4.0 so far, but I will probably make a B in Physiology- but honestly I am a little burned out, so I have not put much time into it. Too much stress on my plate with husband getting huge pay cut and worry about losing his job. A warning on Physiology in Fall and Spring, unless you have 60 hours at ACC, you will not get first choice, they do not offer enough Phy classes and they fill up very quickly. Maybe you will have better luck in the Summer since most people shy away from Summer courses. BUT, if you watch the class numbers and are willing to change classes after the first week, I noticed a lot of classes had openings. So, if you cant get who you want, just sign up for a class that works and watch for drops. Also, rateyourprof.com is great for professor reviews.

Im taking *** ******, ****...HE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!

def. a great class, he makes Physiology class a great learning experience.

You sound like me. I am in the same exact point in school you are. I need physiology, pharm, micro. Im in anatomy now and it's pretty hard. Im hoping to apply in the fall for spring admission, but I was under the impression that I could apply during my last semester of pre-req's. I hope we can corrospond sometime.

I don't really have anything wise or helpful to add, but I did want to say that it is very refreshing to see all of this excitement and enthusiasm in the posts going back and forth about completing all of the pre-reqs for nursing. I remember when I was trying to get all of my pre-reqs done, waiting some more to see if I had been accepted and then sweating my way through nursing school. Every day of class & clinicals you're convinced you won't make it one more day, and you do. I feel as though I got an excellent nursing education @ ACC.

I wish all of you well.

So today was the first day to register for classes for summer and all of the anatomy classes are filling up fast... I am hoping and praying that there will still be a spot open for me come May 10th (the day those of us with no ACC credits can register)!!! I really wish they didn't go by credits for registration but there is nothing I can do about it.

I am super nervous about this wait, I really want in this class!

Which professor are you aiming on taking Anatomy with??

Be sure and look at the number of students who dropped anatomy last semester. Don't give up hope yet.

If you have 1-9 semester hrs you can register Sunday May 10--one day before the peons.

That is true. It is crazy how many students drop during the first couple weeks. My Pharmacology class was so full at the beginning of this semester and now we are lucky to have 10 students out of the 30 that started! Same goes for my Micro class, we started with 24, now we have 11.

I took Anatomy and another class with * ***** when completing my pre-requisites many, many years ago. I really liked him and made A's both times..the last class I took with him, my final grade was a 100%. He gets grouchy with the people who don't come to class unprepared, but I never had a problem with that. :specs:

Oh, how I miss the days of making A's. They are so much harder to get in the nursing program!

I have heard that same response from nurses at my work that its harder to get into nursing school now...one said it was much easier to get into nursing school years back, she got in with a 3.0 at UTHSC in SA and there weren't any Entrance Exams you had to take to get in the program such as TEAS and HESI...I wonder why its sooo much harder nowadays to become a nurse when there is a suposal shortage, you would think they would make it a lil easy on us.

I honestly don't have a preference for teacher or campus, I just want in!! I am going to be nervously checking constantly this next week or so... I was hoping since it was a summer session that it would be less competitive but I guess not :\

RadiationRN how did you like pharmacology?

Specializes in Radiation Oncology.

Pharmacology is fine. I cannot recommend ***** ***** enough though. She is awesome! Yeah she seems a little monotone at times, but she just has to warm up to ya. She is an RN Phd and she really has tons of years of nursing experience and it shows in how she teaches her classes. Her exams are all multiple choice and her exam reviews are great. I did not purchase the textbook because her notes that you purchase are very detailed and all the exam stuff comes straight from her notes. The dosage exams are tough at first, but once you get the hang of them, they become simple, time consuming, but simple. The first one took me over 3 hours and I barely passed it with an 80, but the last 2 I scored 96 and 98 and they only took me about an hour or so.

If you haven't taken Intro to Micro yet, I seriously recommend **** ******!! She is AWESOME!!! She has been my favorite professor at ACC so far.
