Hi everyone, I want to know if there are members of honor societies here and what are the benefits? Which honor societies are reputable, have high standards, and are recognized and can help with careers, job applications, etc? Thank you.

I was invited to join sigma theta tau in nursing school. I paid dues the first year as a student. I didn't find it made a difference one way or the other during my job search, and didn't feel the benefits were worth the cost of membership, so I did not renew after a year. I am a member of other professional organizations that are more pertinent to the work I do and that offer CE's, etc., that I actually use and benefit from.

Sigma Theta Tau seems to be the most prestigious nursing honor society. I joined in undergrad and have maintained for the most part just so I can keep tossing it onto a resume if I need to.

Once I got into grad school I got into Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key International (both focus on all areas of academic study), and similarly just use them to toss onto a resume should I need to. I will say though that all 3 provide info and opportunities for exciting conferences and travel, like Golden Key has a trip this summer to view the Chinese medical system for 2 weeks, and I likely will attend one of these once I finish my FNP degree this year.

As far as any real major benefits, I wouldn't count on any of them landing you a job on their own.

Like others I joined sigma theta tau in undergrad. I did not see any real benefit other than using it on my resume. However, there were students that were much more active in the organization than I was who may say that there is worth in joining. I stopped renewing my membership but am glad I joined as I can renew at any point in the future. I think sigma theta tau seems more influential in the academic circles than real practice.

I was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau while I was in nursing school, and I assumed it would give me an edge, come up in interviews, and help get a job. It never even came up in an interview so I never renewed my membership after my first job.

I too am a member of Sigma Theta Tau, but as a graduate student. The major benefit that I experienced as a member was being asked to represent my school and present my graduate research a STTI conference. I was very honored and because I'm now considered 'published' for this, I can use it on my CV/resume. I also attend bi-monthly regional meetings that are great for networking. Someone asked if you can 'just join', but no- you need to be invited.
