I get an urgent call to go to one of my preschool classrooms. I go down there.

One of the paras, who is a very large lady. (My nurse-brain is seeing all kinds of risk factors!!!) She asks me, "what would you tell somebody that had chest pain, was coughing a lot, and coughing up blood for a long time last night?"

I told her that they needed to go to the ER last night.

She said..."well, it was me. I gave myself until 3:00, but it stopped. But, my chest still hurts today. I just figured it was acid reflux."

I explained to her that she doesn't need to be at school, she didn't seem to think this was necessary.

I said, at least then call your dr. right now. I re-iterated...that she does not need to be here and that sometimes people blame acid reflux on much more serious things.

She headed back into her classroom, and said..." Oh, I was just hoping you would tell me that it was acid reflux and that this is normal.'

I looked her square in the eye, and told her that she would never hear those words come out of my mouth, and that she needs to call her dr. She said she would, I said...In the next 5 minutes.

I came back to my office and waited about 20 minutes. Called back to her classroom. One of the teachers answers and said that the para doesn't want to call the dr. and doesn't want to do anything about it.

I said that she didn't need to be here, and that I am going to mention it to our administrator. Soooooo...that is what I did.

I guess my vent is....IF THEY DON"T WANT THE NURSE"S OPINION>>>>>>DO NOT ASK!!

Sorry...this sounds kind of harsh...but I just had to get it off my chest.

Ug, I recently had a teacher who was prescribed Norco 5/325 asking me how much she could take if she just had it 3 hours ago. I saw the label said it was to be 1-2 tabs Q8 prn. I pointed out how it was prescribed and told her that I could not give her medical advice. This is not the first time this teacher has come to me looking for medical advice, specifically pertaining to controlled meds.

I think I need to say something to my principal, it happened a week ago but I am still feeling uncomfortable about it.

I would tell her to read the label out loud to you, and refer her to her doctor if that's not palatable. But yea, that would make me uncomfortable, too.

Kind of like the staff member that needed an emergency BP taken during my lunch period. Yep, it was awful - 116/68. Him interrupting me on the other hand while I am trying to eat my "lunch" at 1:30 PM made my BP go to 200/100. He tells me he needs it taken because he was taking a shower last night, the hot water hit his neck and............................ honestly, at that point all I heard was blah, blah, blah. I have no idea if the connection to a shower and BP was ever made as My stomach was growling rather loudly!

Staff asks me questions a lot. It often ends with "and you should check in with/see your doctor." Then I get the sheepish grin and "I was hoping you weren't going to say that..."

Teacher's schedules can be awful to make appointments around sometimes. I have also emailed an administrator once to tell them I saw a staff member that could not be in school anymore today because they needed to see a doctor (staff member was hesitating big time because of course load/etc and needed to be seen).
