Hospitals only hiring BSN's?

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

when i interviewed for my current position as a student health assistant the clinical manager asked what my goals were. i explained to her that i am pursuing my adn. she told me that hospitals are not hiring nurses with adn's anymore and that you must have a bsn to be considered. is this true, or is it only for certain hospitals? i don't want to try to obtain my adn and not be able to use it.

How is the training different? When I was hired, ADN's and BSN's had/have the exact same training.

When I worked in the hospital, there was ZERO difference in training or pay for BSN vs ADN. I don't know why the training/orientation would be any different.

*** I am an instructor in a hospital's 7 month Critical Care Nurse Residency program for new grads going directly into critical care. The BSn grads do indeed require more training. For example we send them with an instructor for three days to out patient surgery to learn to do IV sticks, NG tube insertion, and some other hands on skills. Most have never attempted an IV even on a dummy arm. ADN grads from our local tech college get one day since all of them have placed several IVs & NGs in order to graduate from their program.

There has not been a better time for every nurse to unionize with the NNOC. In spite of threats from hospitals wanting give backs, no raises, increases cost to employee for medical benefits, etc, Nurses unionized with NNOC have gotten raises, maintained benefits, pensions, etc.

They WILL strike, and the hospitals in California know it. If they can prosper in these times, other nurses can. NY nurses took over their union from the powers who were running it badly for so many years, and are doing well.

Do not sit back and be a, "Martyr Mary"! Be proactive and call the NNOC!

These hospitals are not "required" to hire BSN nurses, they are staffing by choice due to their Magnet status, and others are following. Sucks, but it's there. Also, Knoxville has so many nursing schools feeding the hospitals, they can pretty much do what they want.

*** Yes, the false and self serving "nursing shortage propaganda" had borne fruit for those who propagate it. Tired of having to be nice to your nurses and having to provide decent working conditions or they will vote with their feet? Encourage a vast over supply of nurses with false propaganda. Then when there are 10-15 RNs lining up for every open position and desperate for a job you won't have to be nice to them or provide decent working conditions.

In brief, I have had my ADN since "93" and now my Super Mega Magnet hospital has decided that it is no longer going to hire ADNs. Plus, ADN nurses can't perform internal job transfers without at least being enrolled in an ADN-BSN program. Granted,my hospital does assist in nurses getting connected with BSN schools, and enough money for two classes a year .

On that note, I am now about three classes from finishing a RN-BSN program ,and must say it is easy.Right now,so many nurses that worked along side me, that I thought had a BSN are now in the same school. Also, these schools now follow what I call ," The Happy Student Business Model" . For example, an unhappy student will not return - so do not pass go and collect your $2500/class tuition ,and tell others not to enroll. In turn, not good for business. Another thing,if I had the money , I could easily finish two separate nursing schools and get two Masters at the same time .No more than a formality ,and these same schools are pushing the agenda that always will equal more money in there pockets. In addition, I have not learned anything that will make my feet hurt less.Lastly, I can clearly see entry level to a Magnet hospital will require MSN-more tuition money.Really !

*** Maybe. However in my opinion staff nurses don't make anything like enough money to justify all that time and money a masters will require. I hardly think they make enough to justify a $40-$60K BSN from a state university.

However as long as they continue to be sucessful in using their false & self serving "nursing shortage" propaganda to get more governement money to expand nursing programs and entice people into nursing who likely wouldn't have considered it before they can pretty much do what they want.

$40-60K for a BSN??? I paid $24,000 for my entire 4 year BSN education at a University. My car cost more than that.

Two candidates, everything else being equal, why would they hire an ADN over a BSN?

*** I was going by what it cost at a state university in my state. I know lots of nurses who went to private schools and paid $90K+
