George Washington University ABSN Fall 2013

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Hi, starting a thread for GWU ABSN Fall 2013 applicants. Has anyone applied? If so, have you heard anything from admissions?

Mindyland, I'm hoping you can answer a few questions about the program and the Ashburn, VA area. What is the NCLEX pass rate? What is the cost of living? If I choose to attend, I'll be relocating from NY. Would you say it's easy to meet other young professionals in the area?

Congrats ShanghaiGirl and AlmondB10!!! Do you mind me asking when you applied? I know they review on a rolling basis and was wondering how far down the line I am :) Also, was that the first thing you heard from the school since you applied? Not hearing anything is making me anxiousss!

I applied early February and haven't heard any news yet. They probably just finished looking at Nov/Dec applications and are now moving onto January/Feb, or something along those lines.

Just heard that my application was under review and should hear in the next 2 weeks!

I applied mid December. The first thing I heard from the school was a request for an updated transcript. Hope that helps!

mnelligan, just to give you an idea: I applied on 1/05, received an email that my application was "referred to the admissions committee" on 1/15, my application was "under review" on 2/25, and I was accepted on 3/1. Hope that helps! And good luck to you!!

You applied to this program too, nickriga? It seems we think alike!

I also applied in early February, but I haven't heard anything yet. My last name starts with an S; I'm assuming yours starts with an R, so maybe I'll be notified that mine is under review soon as well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Hey Almond,

I relocated from NY, too. So far, their pass rate WAS 100%, but we were told ONE student failed (out of all their graduates from 2009) so I unfortunately don't know the rate.

I moved here from Long Island, and I would say the cost of living is only slightly less than LI, but my boyfriend and I are sharing an apartment in Leesburg (15 minutes from the Ashburn campus) with another couple, and we're paying $1400 a month amongst the four of us. If you live closer to DC, costs are a lot higher. I don't have much (ANY, haha!) free time, so I can't really comment on much else, but we're managing with one income (although I have found many babysitting jobs that I occasionally do).

My clinicals so far have been 40 minutes away (in Fairfax) and my second clinical is in Alexandria (~1 hour 15 minutes away) and you have no idea where you'll be, so it's really a crapshoot when deciding on where to live. It's great right now to be so close to the school itself, but later on, you're barely on campus (I think clinicals are 3-4 days per week in the later semesters).

This area is BOOMING with new medical-type places. My boyfriend is a medical assistant and had no problem finding a job as soon as we moved here. The area is really up and coming, so, yeah, it's definitely not hard to find like-minded people in the field around here.

I just want to say, GWU's professors are phenomenal. I researched more than you can imagine regarding ABSN programs, and one of things that I think was most important to me was the quality of the professors. Everyone is extremely compassionate about the students doing well. The program is INTENSE, absolutely, but everyone is willing to help everyone else out and the professors give you opportunities to show that you know what you're doing (and if you don't, they are available to assist you in any way necessary.)

I'm sure you know that the school has a simulation lab, which is amazing. There is some disorganization and they're still working out some big kinks (the school is still relatively new) but overall, I am so incredibly happy to have chosen GWU.

It's seriously tough. I've always been an A/B+ student and I'm putting in, literally, every minute that I'm not in class reviewing and studying and I'll tell you that I'm not getting As (with the exception of pharmacology). I've learned more than I could have ever imagined (and this is month three, haha) but... totally worth it.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to PM me.

Hello Everyone!

I applied back early December and got an acceptance email on March 15 for the Fall 2013 ABSN program! I was just wondering if anyone knows a good affordable area to live.

Thanks much!

There are a few reasonably priced apartments in Leesburg, especially if you can find a roommate. There are a few people in my class who found people renting their condos, which basically overlook the school in Ashburn. Check craigslist; this is where I found my apartment.

Alexandria is also affordable, but becomes exponentially more expensive the closer you get to the King Street Metro. It's also a nice area and an easy commute into DC, if that is important to you.
