What fields interest you?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

hi everyone!

i was talking with a few other pre-nursing students the other day at a student meeting and we were talking about the fields that interest us or where we see ourselves at in nursing. one of the instructors overheard us and told us to write down what are we thought we would be working in after graduation now and see how it compares at the end... she said most students change their mind after clinicals really start.

so... here is what i have picked as a pre-nursing student. i really (i mean really!) would love to be an or nurse. i was sad to see that our clinicals kinda rush by the field and do not do more... i doubt they even give an actual idea of what an or nurse is or does because it is so quick. the other area i could potentially see myself in is the er... i am love the "on your toes" type settings where you never know what you will be faced with at any time... so the er could be a place i would fit in... i also know an area that i will not be working in... peds. i have a very hard time seeing sick children and tend to let it get to me. i think i could develop a thick skin for a child or two no and then... but i don't think i could work with them on an every day basis without becoming extremely depressed. i dread doing my peds clnicals for that very reason... but, heck, maybe after doing them my feelings will change.

any other takers??

cheers :biere:

Labor and Delivery or bust :)

I'm starting an accelerated BSN/MS program in the summer. Right now I'm signed up for FNP with Informatics as a sub-specialty. I'm actually really considering doing the DNsc though, I'm really interested in health policy, especially in underserved populations. I like midwifery but the job market in my area is not that great, I wouldn't do peds because of the parents (surprised no one else has mentioned that), and I wouldn't do NICU because there's too many moral gray areas and I think it'd be too emotional for me, also the parent issue is there again. My undergrad degree is in neuroscience (and CS) so I've been thinking I should look into that as a specialty. There's just so many options!!!

My whole main goal of nursing is to be in the O.B., I realize that can change, after I had my daughter 8 years ago I told my husband "That is what I want to do", then low and behold 5 months later, I found out I was pregnant with our son, that just made me want it even more, I stayed at home to raise them until they were in first grade (daughter in 2nd), then found out I was pregnant one "Last and final time" with our 3 month old son, our oldest and baby are 18 days of being 8 years apart, anyhow to make a long story short, after 3 baby's I feel right now, that I will probably remain wanting to be in the O.B.,

Good luck to you all and God Bless

My dream is to be a NICU nurse. I would also consider Peds or Cardiac. My motivation to be a NICU nurse is my youngest daughter. She was born with several heart defects and spent seven weeks in the NICU. I always knew I wanted to go to college but had no idea what for. She helped me make up my mind. She will be 4 in two weeks and is doing great. For anyone else who wants to work in the NICU, I just read a book called Baby ER. I highly recommend it.

I have been thinking about....oncology, Critical Care or maybe OR

I'm sure I will change my mind a hundred times. I'm so excited that there are so many choices!!

i have always wanted to do L&D and it was confirmed when i had my son!! all of the nurses were soo great!! it is also cool b/c i am a hopsital volunteer that was lucky enough to get the ONE open spot in the birth center!! if i don't do L&D i want to be a midwife or OB/GYN NP!!

I always wanted to be in the NICU, but I got to try that during my clinials in high school and left there crying every single day. I got too attached to the babies.

I would say L&D or cardiac. After my mom had a bypass, I became interested in that area. But I'm sure I'll change my mind a million times once I actually start clinicals in nursing.

Specializes in NICU.

Baby ER is a wonderful book!

I'm thinking of either Peds or NICU... Ever since I've thought of being a nurse, I've always known I'd want to be a nurse with kids and babies...

I've thought of ER and OR, too. I probably won't do ER, but possibly OR...

CRNA.

Looking forward to Med/Surg and M/SICU.

I'd also like to try out ER/Trauma.

Specializes in SICU, ER, MEDICAL.

Oncology or Labor and Delivery!

Specializes in L&D all the way baby!.

This is a great thread! My daughter just asked me tonight if I still wanted to take care of "babies". YEPPO! That IS WHY I am becoming a nurse. I love the NICU and though I know a lot of people think it would be an awful place to work, I know from personal experience that NICU is where I need to be. But I will say I'm BIG on breastfeeding (my friends dubbed me the "nursing nazi", which isn't funny because I AM german..lol) so postpartum or OB would suit me as well.

Of course people recommend that you don't make any final choices until you have some experience under your belt but I have known what I want to do for a LONG time and I for one think that is a very good thing! It was the waiting until my kids were older to go back to school that nearly killed me!

Good luck to ALL of us!!

PS I loved Baby ER and also Living Miracles is good and Before Their Time

Pediatric Psychiatric is my first choice because of some of the things I deal with with my son.

I also lean towards Veteran's care as a Veteran myself I feel like I would have a lot to offer to that area.

Then there is Oncology as I am watching a very dear friend of mine go through a battle with cancer

I honestly am not sure yet but as time goes on I am sure I will find my calling

Labor/Delivery, Cardiology, NICU or PICU. I originally decided to go back to school for nursing because of my interest in labor/delivery. However, it seems like SO many people are also interested in the same thing. So, I'm starting to lean more toward cardiology lately. Cardiac surgery just fascinates me! :)

I am interested in the exact same things. But everyone I know is also interested in working with kids or babies. My dad had a pacemaker put in on my 16th birthday (emergency-he would have probably died if had had another arrythmeia (or whatever it is called) and he was born with a hole in his heart so that kind of pulls me to cardiology, but maybe I could do pediatric cardiology? I've always been interesed in NICU though, but it might be too sad for me to deal with or L/D and become a midwife. I've thought nutrition but I don't want to deal with all the unhealthy, obese people who won't admit it is their fault they have diabetes or something and won't let me help them, I'll probably want to choke them instead-not good bedside manner, but maybe it would get them off their butt.
