Trying to get into nursing school in Louisiana or Texas

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I am a 23 year old black male from Nashville TN trying to get into nursing school. I didnt get accepted into Lamar University in Beaumont TX so Im transferring to Southern University in Baton Rouge. I was trying to see if anybody knew how hard it is to get into their program. In my pre nursing pre reqs i have a gpa of a 3.0 but whats probably hurting me is my low overall gpa mainly because when I was a freshman I was just playing around. Oh and I will take the HESI Test again because last time i got a 79 (due to my low anatomy & phisiology score but dont get it twisted I made an A at Lamar in Pathophisiology) So if you have any information on Southern's nursing school or any nursing school in the Louisiana or Texas area please inform me on what you know. I need to know which schools to apply to that would increase my chance. (Oh and I have a misdemeanor from 3 years ago on my background that may or may not effect me. I received a complete background check in the state of Texas because i did a Declaratory Order Form so if you know anything about that feel free to comment on this as well).

i'm in texas. are community colleges out of the question for you. at least to take your pre reqs. from what i've been reading that is too low. what was the charge?

I used to be in Southern's program and I would highly recommend that you continue your search to find ANOTHER program.

whats too low?? and i have already taken all my pre reqs...the charge was a misdemeanor assault...a simple fist fight

i would try and retake some of your nursing pre reqs if you can. A 3.0 is a good gpa but its tough getting into a nursing program with as many applicants as they have now..so a higher gpa would probably help a lot.

Your chances of getting into a nursing program is better with a 3.4 or higher. Its very competitive...I dont think the criminal charge is whats the problem. Most schools care about GPAs on the pre-req nursing courses.

Have you tried some of the ADN programs? Lee College in Baytown has a close articulation agreement with Lamar to go from ADN to BSN. It may help to try Lee or some of the Houston area colleges. You don't want to put your eggs in one basket, so to speak.

In the mean time- try taking some other classes to bring up that GPA. What nursing prereqs have you completed and what were your grades? With that information, we may be able to help you pinpoint what you need to do to improve your chances.

I have not made anything below a B in my science classes. I have a C in History and Statistics....My low GPA comes from unrelated Nursing pre reqs

i was talking about your gpa. like whoever said nursing is hard to get into. you need to raise your gpa
