Shattered hopes.

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

So yeah, my title pretty much expresses how I'm currently feeling. Yesterday I had an appointment with a councilor at my school who is basically checking to make sure that I'm academically progressing at the school. They had to make a revised action play for course studies as I personally modified the original one when I first enrolled due to some classes being filled before my registration window opened up.

Well to get to the point the councilor basically told me I need to change my major as they find that all the schools in southern California are too impacted and full and that I have very little chance of getting accepted into a nursing program. When I heard this my stomach literally fell to the ground, but I didn't let on that I was suffering considerable disappointment as I find the fact that I wouldn't get accepted as a reflection in myself.

Anyways I currently have a 4.0 GPA with around 30 transferable units completed. This includes Physiology and Anatomy, but I haven't taken Microbiology yet. I don't know if I should follow the advice of this councilor and change my major, or ignore it and pursue what I want to do.

The councilor made a mistake. Your chances should be as same as any other 4.0 student with 30 credits.

Don't wait to start preparing for the entrance exam test.

Ignore the counselor, prove him/her wrong! A preadmissions counselor at a top nursing school in FL told me that I had low chance of getting in to the accelerated program with my undergrad GPA at the time. This was before I started my prereqs. Two years later, I applied and got in. Boo to them, I ended up getting into a better nursing school with a scholarship up north and went there instead :)

Look, don't believe all of what counselors say... Nursing is impacted, yes, but there are still people getting accepted on the low end of gpas(lottery programs)...

My counselors told me I was on track to transfer... I was missing half a unit and had to give up my spot for the csula nursing program bc the university wouldn't let me transfer with 59.5 units. By the way my gpa is around 3.8 and I scored an 84% on the teas which is only slightly competitive and I got in.

Do what you gotta do and sometimes you gotta be your own counselor!!!! Your 4.0 is excellent and there's no way you won't get accepted somewhere.

In one way your counselor isn't wrong. I'm at a CSU and they told all prenursing majors that if their gpa was less than 3.75 total to find a new major. The lowest GPA in the new cohort was a 3.89. BUT if you have a 4.0 you should get in. It may take time but you can so I don't know why they think its so impossible with that GPA.

I do agree with what others said so far. The state schools are quite competitive to get into, high GPA and high test score is the way to go. To go the route of applying directly into a traditional BSN program is competitive but if you have good grades and test score you should be fine.

if you are on the financial issue, there's always cc for adn and then do the RN to BSN program afterwards.

interested in CRNA school? You'll have to have a few years experience in the icu I heard before getting into school.
