Retaking too many classes?

Hi,

I switched my program from nutrition to nursing. I wasn't serious when I first got in college and got some C's and 2 F's. I'm really trying to get into the school near me and the average GPA is 3.6. Is it bad to retake classes? I'm trying to retake those classes where I got a C and the 2 F's so that my gpa is really high??

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...all schools have different policies. Some do combine and some take the better grade, though the other grade will appear on the transcript, it won't be figured into your final GPA. So, ask the school itself. The old adage if you want something done right...

If you current school will let the better grade replace, I would go for it if nursing is what you really want. Then again I believe after 5 years you would have to re-take it anyway, and then get that grade.

There's also the option of calling around your area, and finding a school that lets the grade be replaced.

Retaking courses isn't "bad" per se; you will need to find out the particular policies regarding repeated courses from the schools you want to attend. This should be spelled out clearly under the application process.

Some places will not accept repeated courses for the pre-nursing sequence. Others will allow one, still others have a time limit..... So there is a quite range there; you need to look at specific requirements for each program. If the school in question uses NursingCAS (a centralized application service), it adds another wrinkle: NursingCAS – The Centralized Application for Nursing Programs

What could work in your favor is if the classes with low or failing grades are outside of a certain time frame. Some schools will not accept certain pre-nursing credits that are over say five or ten years old. If this is the case then it doesn't matter if you got an "F" in say chemistry years ago because you'll need to retake the class anyway.

Retaking classes to boost a low GPA is not easy. For each "F", "D" or "C" it will take maybe two or more "A's" to nullify that damage. Since we're talking about pre-nursing there is a finite number of courses affected. If you need 3.8 or above to be competitive for entry into a nursing program (based on pre-nursing sequence), taking a bunch of other classes and getting "A" grades may help your overall GPA, but won't effect the one used for pre-nursing if the grades aren't counted.
