prospective nursing student GPA low GPA, road to recovery and applying

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hello All!

Any help will be much appreciated. I'm looking for programs that would look at my non traditional background. Basically, I graduated with a BA Liberal Arts with a 2.1...took years to even fix my credit deficit to be able to be able to graduate.. transcript is all over the place...my last 60 credits are around 3.4.. and I have a few pre-requisites left for which I have a close to 4.0 in. but the problem is a lot of school are looking at my graduating institution GPA not including my postbacc work grades or even grades I transferred in towards by BA!

I have worked in healthcare (experience as a Phlebotmist, CNA, and special needs team leader) and some research experience as well in infection prevention. Am I being unreasonable with trying to find an accelerated BSN/MSN program? I've recovered from my undergraduate days into a highly motivated student looking to pursue my original passion. Eventually down the road I'm looking at pursuing CRNA training or CNS as my final goal.

Any advice/programs I should look into? I would prefer master entry programs but not sure I'd even stand a chance with my stats. Anyone in similar boat? I'm 29.

I had crappy grades, even flunked out of school. Returned at 33 and got straight A's on the pre reqs. Schools had no problem with this. Immature 19-23, 10 years growing up. Returned to school and did well. My school didn't care and only looked at the recent stuff which was a 4.0.

It's unrealistic to believe that you can get into an accelerated program with your GPA. I would hold your breath to even get into a traditional BSN program. Maybe try to get into an ADN program? I had a terrible GPA, a 1.7 while attempting a business program at a university. I transferred to a community college and got accepted into their ADN program. It really depends on requirements

I was a terrible student fresh out of high school too. Many, many years later, I went back. I found a program that only looked at my grades for the prerequisites, got a 4.0 in those classes and got in. Any place that was going to look at my grades from over a decade ago wasn't going to work for me. Some schools will look at the last 60 credits, just the prerequisites or some other variation for students like us. I found one that had an appeal process for "special" students like me. My school also had academic forgiveness (but it wipes out everything and I didn't learn about it until after I took my prerequisites). I'd suggest talking to the schools near you and see what can be done. And I agree with the poster above, accelerated programs are probably not an option (but it can't hurt to approach them). I went to a community college for my ADN. I'd suggest staying away from the for-profit places. They may seem like the only option but with some work, you should be able to find something.
