PLEASE HELP

Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am in the process of registering for classes for Spring 2017. I need an elective that is 3 credit hours. My advisor told me I can choose a language such as Spanish, or Theatre Appreciation, Music Appreciation, and or philosophy. What elective class do you all recommend that I take please? I am stuck between Spanish 1101 and Intro to Philosophy.

Specializes in Psychiatry, Community, Nurse Manager, hospice.

Being fluent in Spanish is a great advantage. But you aren't going to be even close to fluent after one class.

Do you already have a good basis for Spanish? If so, I say take that class and brush up on your spanish.

If not go for philosophy. I minored in philosophy for my first degree. It really trains you to think independently.

Sorry, but none of those classes, except for Spanish maybe, sound that exciting. Can you choose any other class besides those listed? If not, go for Spanish, at least you will have some basic knowledge and may be able to socially converse in Spanish. Also, if you are able to select any other elective, go for a science course: anthropology, intro to bio, chem, physics, etc.

If possible I would take an elective that would help with my nursing classes. Like medical terminology or something like that. Sociology was a fun class though and pretty easy, if you haven't took it already.

I'd go for philosophy as it can be pretty interesting. I made the mistake of taking it online which totally ruined my experience with what could have been an interesting class.

Absolutely Spanish.

I'd take something fun.

Take something fun. Philosophy is awesome, but be prepared to do a lot of reading and writing. It's a great exercise in improving both skills though :-)

Specializes in Critical Care, Education.

Agree with PPs who are voting for Philosophy. It will exercise your thinking muscles and improve your reasoning skills - this is the heart of Clinical Reasoning (critical thinking). VERY relevant to nursing.

This is a requirement for my program. I guess I assumed that it was for most schools.

I would take philosophy if you are considering transferring to a private university. In CC, I thought I could avoid it, and I chose Spanish 101 instead. When I transferred to a private university, philosophy was one of the core requirements. Now, I have to take it in conjunction with my courses in the BSN program.
