Hello everyone , I came to America when I was just 7 years old ! Anyway ever since I was a little girl I always knew I wanted to do something in the medical field . No seriously I used to be the type to give shots to my " patients " A.K.A bears to make them feel better . Now I am a 19F in college about to transfer to a University from community college. Anyway yesterday I talked to my UB ( university at buffalo) advisor and she was so discouraging ! I am such a hard worker I've never wanted to be a neonatal nurse so bad in my life . She was basically trying to put me down asking me if nursing is what I wanted to do ... that I should think about which major to switch too . Never had I ever had someone to value my worth and question my career choices. Saying that out of all the classes i took the one C that I ever gained otherwise I get A's and B+ that i have to be sure. Anyway fact of the matter is can anyone give me advice of what to do when I apply for the nursing program over there ? And how to find a senior nursing mentor ? After all I'll be a junior once I get over there . And just what to expect I know it won't be easy believe me that I'm already experiencing the struggles throughout the courses I'm currently taking . Thank you so much .

There are way too many personal details in here. I would say to try anyways!

To be honest the schools really do not care if you pass or fail, now maybe some of the Nursing instructors will, but they have been Nurses too, they can sit back after the first few weeks of school and tell you who wants to really be a nurse because they care and who wants to be a nurse for the paycheck..After I got out and got working on the floor I could tell too, but it did not matter to me who went to school for what reason as long as my patients were taken care of properly. The schools are a business, I have seen schools try to get people to not go into nursing , and to just go for Medical Assisting or something else because they needed to fill a head count. They are a business so it is all about $$ to them, and IF you have to repeat a class to them so what it will be more money for them..PS I gave my Teddy Bears shots too..lol.. Nursing school is hard no ands if or buts about it..but do not allow anybody to kick you down. Maybe after a while you will find out you do not have it in you at this time for whatever reason to be a RN, Then go to school to be a LPN,if you want then grab up your RN later on, Your job and pay will be different, but you will still be a Nurse, we are all Nurses regardless of what letters we have after our names. Many times on the job I said boy I wish I was a LPN instead of having all this pressure..But see this should be your decision, not any office person at a school..I was a teenage mother still in High school back in 1974, being pregnant and in school was frowned upon back then and I remember my school advisor telling me I would never amount to anything, I proved her very wrong. She was the very person that I thought of at my RN pinning ceremony. Talk about holding a grudge.

I am a little discouraged to see the first sentence in this post. I too, was a young teenage mom. My 1st son was born in 1971, during summer break between my Jr and Senior year of high school. I was never advised to give up my goals. LPN in 1978, ADN in 1989, BSN in 2002 and still a student. I am also nursing faculty in a part-time position. We most certainly care about the success of our students. We are held to a high standard by our national accrediting body, as well as by my state's Nursing Commission. Please don't give a negative name to all college programs.

Hello ChiChiMel,

DO not pay these advisers any mind, they do not know you on a personal level and probably think you are just following a trend. They say this to try to save their rankings and success rate of the passing. Many just go into the field with mind on the money but not having what it takes to successful complete the program. Nursing and medical school are not jokes and you cannot just breeze through. AS long as this is something you have a passion for and will do what it takes to reach that goal you will be fine. Do not allow people to discourage you, their will be many obstacles along the way but im sure with that burning passion you will do just fine.

Here is the reality: people that run nursing schools are the least supportive people in the know.

Here is the other reality: People who teach nursing school you're going to find a few that will want you to succeed.

I don't agree with this poster's comment about finding a few faculty who want you to succeed. Most faculty want you to succeed and graduate.

Advisors suck; they usually don't even have a degree to talk to people like that. All they do is talk about how bad your grades are when you mention the nursing program. It's because they only think about themselves. They honestly don't have a right to speak to someone like that. It's been done to me before. One advisor told me when I was in college I should consider buying an office to rent out to physicians; she said I could decorate it the way I wanted, etc. 😦. Ok...😫 🤔please explain what 19 year old would tell their parent to pay for them to go to college to do something like that?

No I didn't become a nurse 4 years later but I just needed more time and be able to make mistakes, learn on my own pace and decisions for myself.👌🏾

and I won't say good luck, because that's what most advisors say lol and I never end up with luck to start or finish the process of applying. 😄

Hi there! Don't ever give up on your dreams no matter what anybody else tries to tell you. When I was about 20, I had my boss tell me that I should rethink my career path because I will never make it as an RN. Well I proved her wrong! I got my college degree and I pass the NCLEX -RN on the first try! I was half tempted to drive to her house and shove my diploma and nursing license in her face! Now I am pursuing my family nurse practitioner degree and I've had nothing but support from my coworkers and family members !

If this is something you really really want in the worst way possible then you can do it! Don't listen to the naysayers !

Only you can decide if nursing is the right career for you. I am a second degree nurse and i was also told that I would not make it as a nurse. I did make it and I am a good nurse. But it was a struggle. The nursing profession has one big flaw, nurses (female in particular) are very quick to judge and very slow to accept others who may be different. It is kind of like going back to middle school with all the cliques as such. If nursing is your dream, then go for it. As far as that one C. Depends on which class it was in. If it bothers you, retake it. If it is something like biology or A and P, then retake for sure because that knowledge is what nursing is based on.

As I said, I was told that I would not make it as well. I continued and I made it. I don't struggle with the being a nurse stuff or relating to patients or patient care stuff, I struggle the social culture that goes along with the profession. I was told by a doctor in an elevator who happened to over hear my uncertainty about becoming a nurse - "What do you call a nurse who just barely makes the grades, but does make the grades and passes her boards?" Answer" - a nurse. Grades are only one part of being a nurse, if you got the rest, the things you can not learn, but are a part of who you are. then you will do just fine. Have faith in yourself. I was told be a friend once "God put you on this earth to take care of other peoples people, don't doubt it, just do it. It was the path chosen for you by something bigger and greater than our human existence."

One piece of advice I'll give is to pay closer attention to your writing. Your opening statement here is grammatically atrocious. Your poll doesn't make one bit of sense. If this reflects the general quality of your work, I agree with the advisor.

Perhaps you should seek a second opinion. Nursing school is academically challenging, competitive to get into, and expensive. Gather as much information as you can and do some honest self assessment.
