Medical Terminology?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I start medical terminology this fall as a prereq for an LPN program. I'm just wondering if anyone can give me some insight on what I'll be learning and what it consists of? Thanks!

Medical terms .. lol. The class is very easy.

I'm taking it now and its very boring lol.

It's basically an intensive vocabulary class. Consider getting some Mosby's Medical Terminology flash cards (green box is latest edition).

Good luck!

Good day:

Check out Medical Terminology: A Short Course and Medical Terminology: An Illustrated Guide at Amazon.com or your favorite book store.

While I've not taking classes at a school (I've both books), you learn root words, prefixes, suffixes, how to combine forms, and how to dissect new words.

Some basics:

]

  1. Root -- gives the essential meaning of the term.
  2. Suffix -- is the word ending.
  3. Prefix -- is the small part added to the beginning of a term
  4. Combining vowel -- connects root to suffixes and roots to other roots.
  5. Combining form -- is the combination of root and the combining vowel.

]Some important rules to remember are:]

  1. Read the meaning of medical terms from the suffix, back to the beginning of the term, and then across.
  2. Drop the combining vowel before a suffix that starts with a vowel.
  3. Keep the combining vowel between word roots, even if the second root begins with a vowel.

I started reading both books to give me a head start for nursing.

Thank you.

Easy class, I took it online and got an A, and naturally my school ended up dropping it as a pre req after I spent the money and time! Oh well, I was accepted into the ADN for Fall so it will definitely add to my knowledge and that's a good thing!
