Macbook Pro...

Hi all! I bought a MacBook Pro and was wondering how you utilize yours for school? I'm not technologically challenged by any means, I just really don't know where to start. I'm not necessarily looking for apps, so I didn't post this in the Mobile apps section, I was just curious what all you can do with it as far as studying and notetaking. Thanks!

I use iCal for track of quizzes, assignments, exam dates and material covered that day. I use preview or the kindle app for note taking. When the instructor gives us powerpoints I use preview to write anywhere on it .. just like regular paper, also highlighting. same goes for the kindle app except you can't write all over just add notes and highlight! :) you can use iTunes U .. download other instructors lectures that are available online .. they're completely free that helped me somewhat.

I would recommend evernote! https://evernote.com/evernote/ (watch the tutorial videos at the bottom) It's great for keeping all your notes organized and searchable.

I'd also highly recommend following MacMost (Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod and Apple TV Help and Tutorials) a great website with tons of useful short videos and tips, it really helped me transition to a Mac several years ago, and I still follow it for useful tips!

I downloaded evernote on my phone and Mac and have been playing around with it. It seems like it will be very helpful. Although I tried clipping a full page from the internet and in EN there was no picture or webpage, just the words "Screenshot" in the title bar. Do you record your lectures from Evernote? And do I need to upgrade to Premium? I also downloaded genius scan so I can scan things to my EN account.

I downloaded Iprocrastinate and later heard of ICal from some other people so I'm going to check that out. And I think the whole writing on power points and pdf's is where I get confused with a laptop. I know you can on an iPad, but do you buy a stylus and write on the computer screen on the laptop? I didn't think that was possible. Or do you just write text from the laptop? And I have a kindle fire, is there a way or an app I can get to use it like an IPad and write directly on power points and pdf's?

I'm 34 and back in college after a while myself. I use the computer a lot for school, much more than I did 10+ years ago. I took two math classes where the homework was on a website. And many textbooks give you the option of a hard copy or an e-text. I love my mac. I think it's worth the extra money. It works great, is fast, pretty, and never any issues :-)

I have a MacBook Pro and an iPad. Honestly, I don't even use me laptop. Waste of 2400. Everything I do on my MacBook I can do on my ipad mini.
What about power points? How do you open them up and edit when you're in class? Heck, I'm tech savvy (but not so much when it comes to Mac) and I still can't edit power points with my MacBook Pro. The closest the Mac can compare is TextEdit, which is nearly worthless. Is it because I don't have iPages? Mac just doesn't seem to be able to handle anything MSWord-wise. I always end up printing power points from TextEdit with 6 slides/page and make my notes in the margin. I have "The New iPad" (dumb name) so I'm wondering how I can do everything for school on it like you can. I don't buy apps so that's why I'm in the dark here. Thanks!

I'm not too sure about the iPad and kindle because I don't own one. but for PDF .. on preview you are able to click on a certain area of the page and write whatever you want. it's pretty simple once you find out where everything is at.

I just downloaded iprocrastinate and updated everything to it .. I like it so far .. this being my first time using it

I just downloaded Splashtop 2 on my phone and Kindle and the Splashtop Streamer on my Mac and as long as the Mac is turned on I can remotely work from it on both of my devices as long as I have WiFi or Internet connection! I think it was like $5 but seems to be pretty handy. That way I won't have to lug my laptop to class all the time. I also bought WiFi Explorer Pro on my Kindle thinking it would connect WiFi anywhere but apparently that's not what it does. lol It seems to be more like Evernote for file sharing.

For powerpoint files, you can download Keynote for the mac, it's apple's version of powerpoint. It's not 100% compatible, but it's only $20 and its very easy to use, apple has great tutorials as well.

You can also download keynote for the ipad.

Otherwise, you could buy Microsoft Office for the mac, amazon link which has powerpoint included.

I LOVE my macbook pro. I have an ipad which is good for going to college with, but when I get home the macbook is what I use. I don't have much on it to be fair, I just use Pages and Numbers.
