How to prepare for nursing school

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi,

I start nursing school next month, and I was wondering if anyone has read a book that really helped them be a better nursing student? I've found some books on Amazon (e.g., How to Survive and Maybe Even Love Nursing School by Kelli S. Dunham) - can anyone suggest anything similar that worked for you? Thanks a lot.

You could watch the whole series of scrubs just to let go and laugh. After Nursing school, you can watch again and laugh even harder, and see how much hollywood got it wrong.

IMO.

Thanks, but that's not exactly what I'm looking for. I'm mostly hoping to find something with study tips and tips to help me be more successful.

There's plenty of forums for your need. I just don't know how to post the links yet. Hopefully one of the Guides or Staff we'll point you to the right way. Check out the bookmarked forums on the bottom of the Forum subject in Nursing Assistance and General Nursing Student.

We had a book we had to read called mosbys tour guide to nursing school. It was a great book, I loved it. I couldn't put the book down. We used this book for intro to nursing.

Thanks so much! I will try both of your suggestions.

I didn't prepare when I was accepted. Everyone is different, so I couldn't see the point in reading about other's experiences. I will tell you that some of the books you may want to read are the ones you've already read: Your textbooks from A&P. Going into nursing school there is no refresher course for all of the A&P that you've learned, and probably forgotten. They're going to assume and hope that you know it inside and out. I wish I had reviewed that before school. No book is going to prepare you for nursing school. You're going to go there to learn and you're better off starting fresh without any bad habits or expectations. Advice that I would give you is pretty obvious (but will be hard once you're in the program): Learn how to effectively manage your time, even if attending class is optional.. GO, put in at least 30 hours of studying a week, take advantage of any hands on opportunities in clinicals, go to review sessions, find/use/and meet with a study group, make sure you have a good support system... or therapist, and read the material! You will do fine, and you will figure out what techniques and methods work for YOU.

Thank you for your advice, lovemydogs91 - I guess it's all common sense stuff, but I'd just like to have something in print to refer to when I'm going crazy next semester. I will definitely go over my A&P textbook and notes. I should also read up on some time management strategies that worked for other people in intense programs. I'm probably just stressing myself out...

I suggest studying Medical Terminology if you have not already. I took the class in the spring and I start NS this fall as well. I feel great already knowing a lot of medical terms and being introduced to things. I'm going to buy another book to get a different perspective and study Medical terminology more this summer to prepare for nursing school. If your interested at all I think it's very helpful :)

Thanks! That sounds like a book that I would have to buy for class, so I want to hold out just in case so that I have the same copy as everyone else. I found a book that I've been reading called "Student Nurse Handbook: Difficult Concepts Made Easy" and I can't put it down. I think it's just what I was looking for. The beginning has study tips, tips for managing your time, etc. It's basically about small changes I can make to be successful. I appreciate your response and will look through some med term books at the bookstore.

I've been reading blogs and you tubing vlogs for study tips and to hear about other's experiences in nursing school. Today I was watching Rona004's vlog on you tube and it's really good. Nurse Nacole's vlog is great also. And there's tons of blogs on blogspot. Just google.

As for books I've heard good things about Mosbys tour guide also. I haven't read it myself but know others who have.

I checked out the vlogs you suggested and they're fantastic. Thanks so much!
