How different is Biology from the other nursing prereqs?

The reason I ask, even though Bio is not a prereq for nursing, it is for anat, physio, micro, and I SUCK at biology.

My entire life, from middle school, to high school, to college, biology has just not been my subject. The information just does not seem to sink into my brain, and I always seem to do somewhat poorly on Bio tests. (not D/Fs but Bs and Cs, I can never seem to get an A). I study hard, review all my material after class, and still... This can be very difficult when your entire grade is based on tests. I'm taking biology now and am struggling for a B (i think i'll make it)

The reason this worries me is: Is this how it will be for all of my other science prereqs? How different are these courses in terms of learning materal, studying, information sinking in... I am doing great in Chemistry (95%) which makes me think it may just be Biology. Maybe my brain just hates it. I think some of the problem is that I am just not very interested in biology, I like the parts about organs and cells, but that is just a small section of the class, I could care less about some of the other things (such as in what regions certain plants grow..ugh).

Will things be better/different for the other sciences? Or will I just have to suck it up and spend my entire life studying for these classes? (which I am willing to do)

I'd just like you know your opinion.

(By the way, I just have to mention, I'm in a great mood, this is the first weekend in two months that i've been able to sleep in! and its raining! i love rain! )

General biology is pretty much going to be the same as the biology you've had before, giving a broad view of everything biology-related. You'll either have to suck it up and deal with it or find a school that doesn't require it as a prereq, but that's just one class.

A&P and Micro are all directly related to the human body and microorganisms that effect it. If you did ok in those parts of Biology and it interests you, you'll probably do fine, though there may be parts that are less interesting than others. You're not going to be going over plant anatomy or bioregions and so on (though we did cover photosynthesis in Micro as part of cellular respiration).

I found A&P and Micro to be, in general, much more interesting than my prior bio classes (which I hadn't taken since high school).\

(I'm in Northern California experiencing the rain, too! Didn't work out too well for trick or treating last night, but we do need it!)

Yeah I realize I will have to suck it up for biology, I'm just afraid that my trend of sucking at biology will follow me into my other sciences: anatomy, physiology, and microbiology.

Yeah this is what I'm hoping for. I just want to be able to acctually care about the subject (which I will when it gets more into the human body) and I'm hoping that it will help me learn the material better.

I had some really negative experiences with science in high school, and had been doing my best to avoid science classes before I decided to try for nursing, so I was pretty worried about how I'd do on the science classes before I started. It did work out well for me. All you can do is try and see how it goes!

I can't stress enough, how important a good study group is for developing study habits. If you are worried that you are going to have a tough time with these classes: 1) Get organized. Make an assignment calendar so you know what's coming and when. 2) Hit the ground running. Don't wait for stuff to be assigned before you start thinking about it. 3) Find the smartest people in your class and make a group. 4) chill...cause you've got things handled!

Study groups are awesome for keeping you on track and supported. Me and several of my classmates have started a online study group forum to help us through pre-reqs. If anyone is interested in joining us drop me an email. Online is not as good as meeting in person for study, but every little bit helps!

You know, I thought I had the same problem and had the same fears as you with Bio, but this time around it's going great. Sit in the front row, ask questions, go to every class and MAKE yourself be interested.

To me General Bio is nothing like A&P, Micro etc. So, don't worry about that!

I actually did the year long A&P sequence and micro... and am now (while killing time) taking the full bio sequence.

In the past I was never interested in natural sciences... especially bio.

However, after my A&P experience I'm loving bio as I can relate concepts and actually see where it is applicable to my future....

I hope you love the A&P... it's a kick in the #$%#$% but very interesting!

We are required to take Biology & Lab (1610/1615) as part of our nursing prerequisites. I to have no real interest in this course and would not be taking it if I didn't have to. I can tell you what has helped me immensely is taping the lectures... this way if I'm not grasping the concepts in the book I listen to my lectures again... our grades are based exams (3 and a final)... so it's so important to understand the info even if I'm not interested, lol... best wishes to you :)
