Do i still have a chance at getting to nursing school if i fail one class?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I'm taking A&P I right now at my college. I am struggling a lot and, I know there is no way i can do well in this class now, i will either end up with a D or F :( I already know i'm going to retake it and try my best for an A. I'm planning on transferring to another school for ADN program however, after finishing all my pre-reqs. So if i fail this class will i still have a chance to get into nursing school? I'm not sure how it all works when i want to transfer credits and GPA? If someone could help me i would greatly appreciate it.

Hi. I don't know what nursing program you'll bd applying but I'm pretty sure that A&P is a VERY important prereq. And I truly don't think you can get into any nursing program without passing that class.

I'm sorry I'd not what you wanted to hear but the body systems included in A&P are very important to know before entering into nursing school. The nursing instructors assume you know your body systems very thoroughly. (I just applied for the nursing program) but I know that A&P is a crucial class.

Retake it again or what's best try to do well. The semester just started, don't give up.

It's tough to say. Getting a F in a science class, especially in anatomy/physiology is not good. It won't look good on the transcript; however, if you retake it and get an A on it, that will do damage control.

edit: BTW, what I meant by the above is that you will be required to get into nursing school with a passing grade on a prerequisite.

Some schools will let you retake a class, and once it's retaken, you can have the old grade replaced with the new one. You have to fill out a retake form, they don't do it automatically. It will have an "R" (for retake) next to it, but the old grade won't show. Some nursing programs only take the first grade, but many will accept the retake. But try not to retake more than one, maybe two classes. That doesn't look good.

definitely make an appointment with your advisor to figure out the best course of action!

Here is my experience:

My first semester of A&P 1 I took it at a university. Well, as life happens both my grandparents passed away that semester and I knew that that class was going to be on the "back burner" because I wanted to spend every bit with them. I went ahead and withdrew from the class and retook it at a community college and got a B. Could have got an A, unfortunately I didn't put enough effort that I should have. With all of that, I learned that I do best in a very small class because I came from a very small high school. Therefore, I went from the BSN route to the ADN route. You can always do RN-BSN online. I took A&P 2 during 5 weeks in the summer. I also found that I loved the 5 weeks as opposed to the 16 weeks. I took off work and did nothing but A&P, but got a C. With 5 weeks your are able to learn it all at one time and not drag it out and forget what you learned the first week of classes. Hope this helps you. I can't answer the question you asked, but want you to know you aren't the only one that struggles with this class. It is hard and I wish you the best!

Talk to a counselor immediately. It may not be too late to withdraw, which leaves a W on your transcript but doesn't affect your GPA. Before you retake the class look up the professor on RateMyProfessor and choose a great teacher. Then be prepared to put lots of time into the class.

Of the 2 nursing programs that I have applied to, one has a "repeat forgiveness" system. You can repeat one science class one time and no points are deducted from your total merit points. Any repeats after that are 4 points. The other school allows a repeat, but deducts 4 points every time with no forgiveness the first time. I got a C+++++++ in my very first science class after deciding I wanted to be a an RN, and since the C is not repeat eligible (and in the nursing world a C is like an F come ranking time), I opted to take a D before grades were official, and repeated the course the following semester. I received an A the 2nd time and made sure not to put myself in that situation EVER again. So come application time only the A was included into my score (at one of the schools).

I would take the D and repeat the course. Make sure to check your school's repeat policy. Mine saved my boo-tay. And it wasnt the end of the world afterall. Also some schools wont let you use A&P as a pre-req. You have to take Anatomy and Physio separately. So make sure to research that too, if you are applying to different programs. Good luck!
