Concerns about admissions

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

After this term I will be applying my first time to nursing school. I have some concerns, however. In my early college career, I received a few Fs and withdrew from a lot of courses. I was unsure about what I wanted to do, and a lot of family emergencies happened at once, and I forgot to withdraw from the courses I got Fs in.

If you don't account for my Fs, my gpa is 3.5 (and rising). I received an 89% in microbiology, many As in other science courses, and I'm expecting to get an A in anatomy as I've received 95+ % on every anatomy exam, lab and lecture, I've taken so far. I've been on the honor roll, got offered to join an honorary club for academic achievement.

I'm just afraid. I guess any advice would be nice. My wife tells me not to worry, especially since I'm a man and tons of graduating nursing students are saying hospitals and institutions of education are really wanting male nurses. I'm just so weary because I've done so well lately, and I want to be a nurse and care for others clinically so bad.

Been there, done that! I understand... Keep positive! It will depend on the college? A.A. or

B.A. degree?

Hum, while you are waiting to get into the nursing program, you could repeat the "F"

grade/classes and have it replaced with a new

grade in place of it and that would raise your GPA even more. You have some options... :geek:

Either way, the main thing is you are ready to apply to nursing school now! :) That took

hard work! :up:

I don't think your gender will give you an edge? Yet, I am not really sure on this... :down:

Oh, yes I almost forgot to tell you. Most college's will do a "one-time" removal of so many "F" grades

if they are over many years old... I think, it has to be past 7 years? I forgot what the name is called? The counselor makes an appeal

and you fill out some forms... The dean signs it. I had to do this for myself and most college's do not put it out there for students to know. I will research it for you! I'll be back! :smug:

You are probably the most positive (yet honest) person I've met. I thank you for that. I don't find many caring people anymore. I'm applying to associate and bachelor programs, though I will ultimately earn my BSRN. I could repeat the Fs, but they're actually in oddball classes like photography and multimedia. The college I went to wants me to pay cash instead of using financial aid if I go there again, so retaking them really isn't an option unfortunately. Those classes I took were two years ago, so thank you for the advice! I have heard of auditing them, but two years probably isn't enough. Thanks for the offer for researching.

I don't think my gender should or would give me an edge either. It's seemingly an unfair advantage. There are benefits to male nurses, and there are fewer, but that doesn't mean good female candidates should be overlooked. I'm just saying what I've heard from nurses and students. So who knows.

Back! It's called: "Academic Renewal" up to 3 classes with an "F" grade will stay on your transcript, but will "not" be counted in towards your final GPA. It is a "one-time" deal and the grades needs to be from years ago. I think 7 years? Any current "F's" after that can be retaken for a different grade... The "F" stays, but the new repeated grade will be counted into the gpa, not the "F." I had this done back in 2007. Long story, but it really helped my gpa and got my butt in gear! I hope this helps? No problem! Yes, we need more males in this field for sure! Either way, don't worry about the grades! Press forward with that pen in hand and sign all those papers to get into the nursing program.

Are any of your schools going to just look at pre req GPA? If so then they won't look at what grades you got in those other random classes.

I'm not sure yet. I will find out soon. I do know the schools in Oregon work off of a point system, points for certain grades in prerequisite classes (major points for an A in anatomy), points for getting classes done like microbiology that are program specific (not prerequisite), points for a certain GPA (I don't know if it's an oGPA or prGPA or just sGPA).

Is it possible to include an explanation with your application? Some of the schools I am applying to let you include a document if you feel that your academic record does not accurately reflect your ability. Honestly, I do not think think those grades in photo, etc will have a huge impact. The focus is mainly on your prereq grades, especially the sciences and you have done really well. Best of luck !

Thank you, Penny! I have no idea if I can. I know we will have an essay, and I may include overcoming and learning-from my past. Here, nursing students don't get interviews or long explanations for things. I know med school applicants usually get a chance to explain any grades that are sub 3.00, but I'm not sure about nursing applicants. I would hope so. Often how one presents themself is much different than who they are on paper. We've interviewed people for jobs at the in-law's bakery who were good on paper, but rejected once we met them.
