After this term I will be applying my first time to nursing school. I have some concerns, however. In my early college career, I received a few Fs and withdrew from a lot of courses. I was unsure about what I wanted to do, and a lot of family emergencies happened at once, and I forgot to withdraw from the courses I got Fs in.
If you don't account for my Fs, my gpa is 3.5 (and rising). I received an 89% in microbiology, many As in other science courses, and I'm expecting to get an A in anatomy as I've received 95+ % on every anatomy exam, lab and lecture, I've taken so far. I've been on the honor roll, got offered to join an honorary club for academic achievement.
I'm just afraid. I guess any advice would be nice. My wife tells me not to worry, especially since I'm a man and tons of graduating nursing students are saying hospitals and institutions of education are really wanting male nurses. I'm just so weary because I've done so well lately, and I want to be a nurse and care for others clinically so bad.
I'm in the process right now of this...its tough but stick with it! It's taken me about three months to get the two colleges to get on board with this but perseverance has paid off with one so far :)
I'm also a California student, doing academic renewal through my respective community colleges.

This is excellent - the GPA is rising. And as long as you are beyond stellar in your prereqs and science courses, you should not be too concerned about admissions. You seem to have a good plan: have an awesome essay, awesome letters of rec (if applicable), and make sure you get the maximum amount of points as you can get in the point system.
I was working full time and going to junior college for 3 years and messed up my GPA soo bad. It was only in 2010 that I finally woke up, quit work, and started fixing YEARS of damage! my GPA was like 2.5 or something (I was also on academic probation), I had over 10 "W" and several F's. So I started repeating my F's and W's and replacing them with A's and B's. I finished all my GEs in one year and got 2 associate's degrees. I also took all nursing pre-reqs required for transfer to 4-year college.
I applied for nursing in 2011 to BSN programs. Even though I got all A's on english, anatomy, microbiology, and physiology, I got denied to all 10 schools I applied to. I was CRUSHED but small part of me had expected that. It made me feel worse when those schools told me that I will never have much chance at getting in since I took statistics more than twice (1st was W, 2nd was F, 3rd was B). They told me that they only consider repeats if taken twice.
I didn't give up though! I applied to a junior college 2 year RN program beginning of this year, started volunteering at a hospital and got in! I start in January. I also have talked with an admissions counselor at a respected university and have plans to "dual-enroll" with their program so that I can get my BSN alittle after I finish my ADN program. So i am looking at having my ADN, RN (hopefully), and BSN in late 2014 or beg of 2015. The counselor told me that I have great chances of getting in!
sorry for the long post, but I want to say don't give up! Admit to your fault and take responsibility! It'll be trying to make up for the past, and at times you might feel like you're not getting anywhere and still stuck, but if you keep going, you'll suddenly realize how far you've come. now my GPA is 3.6 and now I am getting all A's! don't give up! if i can do it, then anyone can! have positive people to talk to and study smart! (:

Cathy, that's an amazing story and gives me such hope!!! I failed a class and am now retaking with an A but it is still so daunting and stressful to know it will be on my transcript. Thank you for sharing your story :)

I'll add that I'm a little freaked out also, because even if I get in, waiting an entire year is miserable if I don't get in the first time around. My wife and son are already doing poorly because of our situation with work and me being in school.
I am about to finish my first semester of a BSN program, and I was in the same boat as you. I had 5 F's from moving suddenly and missing the withdrawal date at my first college. I was so afraid I had ruined my chances of being a nurse. What I did was retake the classes I had failed and made sure to do well in every other class going forward. After prereqs I had a 3.6 overall, and a 4.0 nursing prereq GPA. I got into all 3 schools I applied at, so it can be done. You can also look into schools that look at only your nursing class GPA if you didn't happen to fail any of those in the past. Either way, you still have a great chance IMO.
Don't expect any gender-based preferential treatment. In fact, if you have been monitoring the "male" AN forums, many guys have reported perceptions of discrimination - in education and employment. At any rate, hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst.... best to grow a thick skin.
I am a bit concerned about the fact that your family is being adversely affected by your current situation. Once you are actually in nursing school, there will be even more demands on your time and attention which could make things even worse. Open and honest communication, along with a willingness to compromise will be essential.
I really can relate with these stories. I dabbled in school after i dropped out of high school. I have 8 withdraws, one "f" in creative writing, one "f" in a non-credit math course (which has been replaced with a "B", huge gaps in school fa2006-sp2007, fa2009-sp2010, sp2011-current. I am also concerned that this will effect me when the admissions board of UMSON's BSN program is reviewing me. My most current semesters however are a 3.7. I mean business now! I know what I want to do and honestly, I'll apply 10x if I have to. I know I'm capable, and persistent as hell when I want something..
