Chemistry Requirement?

Hi everyone!

I'll be close to finishing up my pre reqs, but I need to finish chemistry which I'll most likely be doing in the Summer. Most schools I've looked at in Illinois requires me to take CHM 142 before I apply, however, are there any schools that require just general chemistry or anything lower than 142?

The reason as to why I'm asking this is because I'm waiting for my CC to approve me to take a placement test for College Algebra (college algebra is a pre req for CHM 142) and taking that the fall semester would hold me back an entire year if I'm not granted the permission to take the placement test and opt out of College Algebra.

Usually, the 100 courses are the lowest level of (creditable) college courses. Anything lower may be considered remedial (non-credit).

Have you tried talking to the Chem instructor to see if you can convince her that you're up to it? In most schools, they can grant waivers for enrollment in their own classes. This plan may a bit risky - if you end up making a poor grade in Chem, it will have lasting consequences that may delay your acceptance even more if you have to do some damage control on your GPA.

Unfortunately, I have to talk to my advisor to see which Chem courses I am eligible to take. I know I can't take Chem 142 but most schools in IL I've looked at require that as their minimum transferable course and I'm trying to find schools that don't require specifically Chem 142.

That's interesting. . . Hmmmm, my school program is just asking for Chm1033.

No I'm in Florida. But I have heard biology majors etc have to take upper division chemistry classes like the one you've mentioned. Maybe IL nursing programs are more advanced then the ones down here in Florida??

I hear you when it comes to prerequisites classes. Lol, they are a pain!! I received a C my second time around for Chemistry and don't know how well I'll do in my Ap 1 classes until this semester is over.

Mac1105 is kicking my butt....hard..... Frustrating. Makes me think about other career choices. Good luck! And tell us how you do.

Another option for you, if your school accepts CLEP credits, is to study for and take the College Algebra CLEP test. You get credit for it if you meet the school's score cutoff criteria, but it does not apply to your GPA. It doesn't cost nearly as much as paying for the entire class. It's certainly not easy, and I would only recommend this route if you have a decent understanding of the material already, and are prepared to do some studying prior to the exam.
