I did an acid-fast test today for the Unknown.....one of my bugs came up red after the acid fast staining and the other blue. The red one is the shape of a cocci but as far as I know acid fast bacteria are bacilli.....are there any acid fast cocci? The only acid fast bacteria that we have learned about are mycobacterium (bacilli) and Corynebacterium pseudodiphterium which is 0 shaped.
BTW it was a nightmare to get started with this Unknown and I am really disturbed by the whole experience.

I don't think so.
Try the test over again. 1, you could have a contamination. 2, It could be bacilli that looks like a cocci.
Some of those things are tricky.

I will definitely do the test over in open lab on Monday. there are three possibilities according to the chart we were given and the closest one I can come up with is Mycobacterium Phlei.
This is giving me a headache.
BTW good to see you and I hope you are doing well.
Thanks, back at ya.
I'm actually trying to avoid History right now. I should be doing terms & reading.
Well, I'm reading AllNurses...does that count? :chuckle

Well, yes, History: you are reading about the "The Microbial War of 2006 down at the Alamo"
Oh yeah, I forgot about that war at the Alamo. :roll :roll :roll
Can you hear the cannon fire :angryfire I am trying to shoot those darn microbes down but I guess my aim is a bit off this morning. Maybe I need to call Dick Cheney to help me out here.....
"Hey Dick, come over here....!!!! Quick, over there to the left.... looks like a Quail-o-coccus, can you get that for me????"
Kaboooooom....Man Dick, what did you do, you shot me in the face.....now look over there is a cigar shaped corny bacterium (that's the way I remember Corynebacterium) Kaboooooom....good job Dick, it fell over!
FUN2 Care, send that boney man....I need re-enforcement, I see a huge colonie of bacilli on the horizon headed this way.......and they got spores.

Its been a few years (4) since I took micro but I don't belive that acid-fast Cocci exist.
thank you for your response. I looked everywhere and couldn't find any anywhere....it's got to be a bacillus

My teacher says that sometimes you could get a red color Cocci because of dead or dying cells may appear red. Also maybe you used to much decolorizor????? I am not sure though, I am still trying to get used to all this Micro stuff myself.
Oh holy "Staphasaurus" you got it bad!
You've had a microbial breakdown. :chuckle
