Age of a late bloomer

Hello my Fellow Nurses:

Quick question: I am at odds of what I truly want to do in my life and that is to be a nurse. I have received my education in biology and a minor in Chemistry. I completed my internship under a great OB and couldn't wait to start reaching my goal. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to start due to financial hardships so I had to work in education on the operations side. Its good money but day in and day out, I know this is not where I belong and what I want to be. I am 30 and about to turn 31. I am nervous if by the time I fulfill my goal I will be 34. Is this too late for me. Am I too old to pursue nursing? I would love to hear your advice.

I became an RN at age 41, second career. You're never too old.

I hope not! I just turned 29 & will get my CNA II before starting my pre reqs. If all goes as planned I won't even start nursing school until I'm 31. I know plenty of RN who didn't start until after 25 :)

Once you've found what you really want to do, no matter the age, you should pursue it. You want to become a Nurse. That's great! My only question to you is this: Are you dead yet? If your answer is no, then you're young enough to go for it! I'm now 40. I still have about 30 years or so of good working years ahead of me! I figure that should be easily enough to set me up for a good, comfy retirement. The fact that you're "only" 30-ish means that you've got probably around 40 years of work ahead of you. Think what you can do for yourself in that 40 years, especially in the planning for retirement...

Oh I'm so glad I found this thread! I will be 34 next month and will be starting the nursing program next fall, I've been having the same concern myself. I'm currently a CMA and I run a doctor's office, I graduated two years ago after changing from a seven year career in risk management, and it has been very nice without the pressures of school. However, I always find myself wanting more and I have come to love patient care. I will have my ASN at 37 (hopefully) and my BSN by 40. Sometimes I feel as though I'm behind in starting a career at that age, but then I realize I only feel that way when I compare myself to other people. Even with a BSN at 40 there will be plenty of time to build a nice retirement fund haha. Besides, I find the majority of people that have been "established" in their careers do not really enjoy what they do and that can make a world of difference. Don't compare yourself to others and if this is truly what you want then you must go for it. Don't worry about the time it will take to get there, the time will pass anyway. All the best to you!

I went to LPN school when I was 19 finished when I was 20 and when I got out it was kind of hard for me! I was younger then most of my CNA's by a good almost 10 years for most, so they didn't like taking orders from me. There where also family members that looked at me like I was just a kid! You are no where near old your age will probably benifiet you! I finished LPN school with a woman who was like 60 and girls in my RN class where in their upper 40's. If nursing a what you want to do, do it!

Honey, I'm going to be 45 when I'm done with my RN, 46 when I'm done with my BSN. Hopefully 48 when I'm done with PA school. You are NEVER "too old" to pursue your dream!

I'll be 42 when I finish my LPN,I waited because for the most part I have been a single mother of 3 kids.My last child will graduate in May of 2014.I feel like it's now or never for me and I've waited so long to pursue the career that I've always wanted.I am SO ready!:up:
