Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

First of all, I absolutely hate to ask this, but I really need some suggestions because I am low on inspiration. Thank you in advance!

I'm trying to squirm my way through Nursing Pre-reqs in upstate NY. My goal is to be a nurse (RN) / medic and work in an OR / ER / medevac unit. However, I'm stuck. I like at least 45 minutes from the nearest college and I am not able to move at this time. Plus, the expense of classes, books, gas, you name it, has me completely overwhelmed. I'm finishing up my EMT-B certs in a couple weeks, so I know I love the field, but I confess I'm getting very discouraged. Can anyone give me any advice about scholarships, minimizing expenses, or anything else at all that would be helpful? Sob stories, while not specifically helpful, are at least consoling. I know I can do it. Actually, I am willing myself to get there, this is just a bumpy spot and I could really use a hand. Thanks again!

Well then?

Nothing to it but to do it, through thick or thin.

What makes you unable to move?

Regardless, if you're willing to do the 45 minute drive, then do it. Apply for all the scholarships you can through the school, online, etc. Working part time would help as well if you're able to.

You'll probably find that commuting is cheaper than moving even though you are paying for more gas. 45 minutes is really not too bad. It's a great time to destress, really. Try to schedule your classes on the same days. I could usually schedule all of mine on either Tues/Thurs or Mon/Wed/Fri. Then you're not driving to school every day. You might see what the school has to offer concerning scholarships. Then do some hunting around locally; chances are some businesses in your area offer scholarships. Look for used textbooks online. You could even email your professors to ask about using older editions, since those can be much cheaper. Make your own coffee and pack your lunches. It's amazing how eating out adds up so quickly. Good luck!

OK. There are no nearby programs for you to attend but you are unable to move at this time. Your financial situation is very challenging. Time to think outside the box. Can you carpool with anyone to share expenses? Do a comprehensive search for all available scholarships & apply for all of them.

But I am concerned about another statement you made... you are "trying to squirm my way through nursing prerequisites"... if this means that your GPA is not so good, you may have a more serious issue to deal with.

Any possibility of public transportation? When I took public transportation, it was a great opportunity to study!

Talk to the financial aid office at the nearest college. There may be options you never considered.
