Anyone got any advice or words of encouragement for statistics? I am so bad at math, I am hoping Statistics is different. But word problems are horrible too!

No advice, but I can offer words of encouragement....lol

GOOD LUCK!!!!! :)

(Also, make sure you utilize your school's tutoring service, if they have one, or form study groups!)

That's about all I can offer.

I don't remember much in the way of word problems in Statistics. Mostly it was formulas, and knowing which formula to use for which data. It wasn't easy, I did lots of studying for that class. I've seen other posts around here from people who said their stats class was super easy - so I guess it depends on which school you go to, what level the class is, and your abilities! Good luck! May the force be with you:)

My advise is to ask around and find a good teacher. I go to ratemyprofessors.com and see what other students have said about certain professors. I have always had so much trouble with math but ended up with an A in the class because I had a great teacher.

A lot will depend on how well you did understand Algebra (or calculus if it is a calculus based stats course). Statistics is basically math applied; you will be using your math skills to interpret data and situations. If you stuggled in your previous math courses, I would make sure and seek out a tutor early if you have any challenges.

Math is my least favorite subject and I always have a harder time comprehending math. My Descriptive Statistics class was pretty easy. I also had a great professor who really made things easy to understand. Just don't let the class intimidate you. Find some classmates to study with and you will do fine. Good luck!

I also hated math in high school. I took the bare minimum I had to take to graduate. When I took stats for my MSN, I was terrified because of my "math deficit." My professor, who also hated math, put me at ease immediately by telling me excellent math skills aren't needed. I aced the class with straight A's and found out that although math is still not my thing, I loved statistics. I am now in my 3rd stats class for my PhD in Research and Psychometrics. If I can get to this point, you can, too.

Introductory stats are all about formulas and understanding the concepts behind them. I used formula cards, which worked well for me. You do have to study, but if you keep up, you will do OK. If you don't understand something, ask right away, because what you learn next week will build on what you learned this week. Don't think, "Oh, I'll get it later." Once you get through the basics and start being able to apply it to testing situations, it's much more enjoyable.
