Is it possible to get a job at CHOP?

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

I really want to work at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. I work nearby and I love the area. I'm not a nurse but I'm studying to be a nurse and I want to start at CHOP to get my foot in the door. Every nurse that I know that works at CHOP appears to be happy. It seems so hard to GET IN. Is it possible to work at CHOP?

To all the people that were contacted by the recruiter, did you get the job?? And if so, do they have any clerical openings in your department?

I have applied a number of times, only to repeatedly get the same ejection email. I'm not quite sure why a GN would more closely meet their needs than a hopkins BSN prepared nurse with 9 mo. medsurg experience would...whatever, their loss.

Anyone else have some info on CHOP?? I'm currently going thru the application process there adn would love to hear of people's stories.

What was it like interviewing with nurse managers there?? I had an interview with a recruiter who is passing my info (hopefully) to managers, but don't know waht to expect from the managers..

I really want to work here!! any tips would be greatly appreciated!!:loveya:

Hey there,

What unit are you applying to work in? I'm currently working in the PICU, so the strengths managers are looking for might be a bit different from another unit. Basically, be sure to come ready knowing examples of times you've used critical thinking skills, advocated for a patient/family (we're big on family-centered care), and it never hurts to know a bit about the hospital. I made sure that I was familiar with their mission statement, that always helps.

Good luck!

i told the recuiter i'd be interested in nicu, picu and ed. mainly nicu though.

scooby484k: as for examples of critical thinking, i keep hearing this, but am not sure what examples would qualify as this? i know i do it every day at clinical, but i'm having a hard time determining exactly what types of situations i should detail since up until now i've only been a student level nurse.

as for knowing about chop, i'm good there! :) i have done so much research to be sure that it was where i want to be, and at this point, i've focused all of my energy on applying there (which may not be the best idea considering the economy, but it is where i want to start and end my career as a nurse and i know i wouldn't be as passionate with other nursing opportunities).

again, thank you so much for your help!

I'm feeling particularly chatty after today's shift (don't know how, I worked my butt off today and am about 10 minutes away from passing out... maybe I'm giddy?). So I figured I'd post another one for you...

If you want to be in an ICU, the managers will want to be sure you can handle the stress. They might ask you if you've ever been present during a code, and if you've ever worked around end-of-life care for patients (being able to accept death and the environment that surrounds it often separates the ICU nurses from other nurses). They're looking for maturity, an ability to do your job without becoming overwhelmed by the fast-paced and stressful environment, and this is for good reason: they want you to STAY working there, and they want you to handle stressful situations well (for example, completely falling apart and losing your ability to be a nurse during a difficult assignment is a problem when the patient needs care). They might also want to ask you a simple question: Why do you want to work in the ICU? Be honest, but put some thought into your answer beforehand so you can express yourself well.

As for critical thinking... try to find a time when you put two and two together about a patient and didn't need someone to spell it out for you... a time when you knew, based on a patient's condition (vital signs, assessment findings, etc.), that something specific needed to be done. For example, it could be as easy as knowing to notify the doctor (if an oncology patient develops a fever, or a patient's neuro status changed suddenly and pupils are unequal, etc. etc.). They might ask, they might not. Depends on the manager.

Anyway, I hope that helps a little. Good luck! :specs:

Does anyone who has gotten a job at CHOP or is currently going through the application process have tips on getting through to recruiters? I've been applying to jobs on the website, but I never hear anything...not even a rejection email! Do you call nurse recruiting/human resources? Any tips would be fantastic. I visited CHOP once and LOVED it. Much better than the hospital where I currently work...

hi gogatsby-- i've gotten thru to a couple recruiters. i'm not sure exactly what it means or if i am any closer to a job, but i have met with one for a general nursing formal interview, and then had a phone conversation with the unit specific recruiter for a specific job. i think the phone conversation by the specific unit recruiter was to screen me and ask more questions before she presented my application to the nurse manager. who knows if she liked me because i was unaware our phone conversation was going to be an interview until she started bombarding me with interview questions!! ugh!! i'll find out in a few weeks if the unit specific manager wants to meet me.

my biggest suggestion would be to call the nursing and respiratory career center. ask if you can speak with a recruiter or if you can, suggest that you volunteer your time. they are hard to break through, but it can be done. also, do you know anyone that works there who can speak highly of you to their manager? i think that if a nurse manager asks to meet with a specific person the recruiters will bring them in..... chop really seems to be a place where it is all about who you know....

good luck!

gogatsby -- any luck!???
meggarn2b --- I haven't really tried too hard! I've applied to a few jobs, but my goal for January is to call recruiters and everything. I need to get out of the job I'm in currently!! Any luck for you? Did you ever hear back from the manager? What area do you want to work in?

Hi Meggarn2b! Did you interview with the nurse recruiter? How did it went because I have an interview next week. But I am not sure if its a formal or informal interview which confuses me even more.

Happiness5...Did you call and try to reach a recruiter, or did you just apply through the website and they contacted you? I'm going to try calling someone on Monday, so I'm looking for information! Any tips you have to share??
